This file contains some information regarding the PC version of
"INNOCENT - until caught". It contains some advice on using
certain hardware features which you may have installed on your PC.
At the end of the file there are some explanations on the error
messages that the game may report if it is having difficulty in
running on your system.

Please note that this file is for use primarily if you encounter
problems running the game on your PC. Don't be put off by all
the information not relevant to your system: the game is designed
to make the most of your particular PC - in most cases, you can just
play the game without any modifications.

SET_IUC PROGRAM
===============

If you wish to reconfigure the game, run SET_IUC from within the
directory containing the game. Any options set up from within SET_IUC
can be overridden using the command line options whenever you run the
game. For a list of these options type IUC /? from within the game
directory.

CONFIG.SYS FILE
===============

The CONFIG.SYS file that is present in the root directory of
your hard drive probably contains a line that has the form
FILES=xx where xx is a number. Please ensure that this number
is at least 20. If you have a network or certain other drivers
active, you may have to increase this number (see Errors below).

MEMORY
======

The game requires approximately 570K of free base memory to run.
For sound options, more base memory may be required (see below).

In order to obtain a sufficient amount of memory for the game,
you may be required to reconfigure your system set-up.
Some suggestions for how to do this are listed below. For full
details of all these suggestions, please consult your DOS manual.

1. Ensure that DOS is loaded high. This will involve using a driver
   such as HIMEM.SYS.

2. Reduce the number of TSR's that are loaded, and then remain,
   in memory. This will involve altering your CONFIG.SYS file.

3. Run a memory configuration program such as Memmaker to ensure
   all necessary drivers are efficiently loaded into memory.

4. Check the size of your mouse driver. If it is taking up a large amount
   of base memory, it may be possible for you to use a smaller driver.
   In extreme cases, remember that the game can be used with either a
   joystick or the keyboard.

5. One of the easiest solutions is often to boot up your computer from
   a specially-prepared boot-disk. This can be done by formatting a blank
   floppy disk using FORMAT A:/s (assuming the floppy is in drive A:).
   When you switch on your PC to play the game, ensure that this disk is
   in your disk drive, so that it is used to boot your PC.

EXTENDED MEMORY
===============

If available, we strongly advise that you run the game with Extended
memory (XMS). Extended memory is essential for you to hear
SoundBlaster sampled sound effects.

Please note that any extra memory in your PC can be set up as
Extended or Expanded, depending on the memory drivers present. The game
will only detect Extended memory, so please check the set-up of your
system. Consult your DOS manual for further details.

MEMORY/DISK CACHING SYSTEMS
===========================

We strongly advise against running the game with any disk caching
drivers active. This is not because of incompatibility, but because
the caches invariably use extra memory that the game can use far more
efficiently.

SOUNDCARDS
==========

AdLib
-----
If you choose to run the game with AdLib music, then you will
require an additional amount of base memory: approximately 26K.

SoundBlaster
------------
If you choose to run the game with SoundBlaster music and sound effects,
then you will require an additional amount of base memory:
approximately 30K.

In order to hear sampled sound effects with a SoundBlaster
(or Soundblaster compatible), there must be at least 256K
of Extended Memory free on your computer. If this is not
available, then you should choose the AdLib music option
in the SET_IUC program, which will allow you to play
the game with full music but no sound effects.

Your AUTOEXEC.BAT file that is present in the root directory should
contain two lines that define the SOUND and BLASTER variables
(of the form SET SOUND= and SET BLASTER= respectively). The SOUND
setting is the directory which holds a sub-directory that contains
the appropriate sound driver for your particular card. The BLASTER
setting contains details of where the soundcard is located within
the computer hardware. For full details, you should consult your
soundcard manual. Both these variables must be set correctly if the
game is to play sampled sound effects.

Roland
------
If you choose to run the game with Roland music and effects, then
you will require an additional amount of base memory:
approximately 17K.

Roland & SoundBlaster
---------------------
If your system has both Roland and Soundblaster sound cards
attached, then you can choose the Roland/Blaster option in
the SET_IUC program. The game will now play music using the
Roland soundcard, whilst also playing sampled sound effects
using the SoundBlaster card.

WINDOWS
=======

Although the game does not use the Windows environment, it is
'Windows-compliant' and as such it will run as a DOS task from
within Windows.

ERROR MESSAGES
==============

If the game prematurely exits, one of the following error messages
should be shown.

Unable to open file.
--------------------
1. Check the game is being run from within the directory into which
   it was installed. The current default directory must contain all
   the files that the game needs.
2. Ensure that the CONFIG.SYS file contains a high enough setting of
   the FILES variable (see above).
3. It is possible that the required file has been deleted or damaged.
   Try re-installing the game.

Not enough base memory.
-----------------------
See the advise given above about the amount of base memory needed to
run the game and how to increase the amount of memory available.

Critical error.
---------------
There may be corrupt files present on your disk drive. Check the
integrity of your drive, possibly by running CHKDSK, a virus checker,
or a disk analyzer, and then try re-installing the game.

Unable to install sound driver.
-------------------------------

1. Roland:
   The game may not have found a Roland card at the port you specified
   in the SET_IUC program.
   Ensure that the jumpers on the card have not been changed from the
   factory setting of using interrupt 2.

2. SoundBlaster:
   Check if sufficient Extended memory (XMS) has been detected.
   Also check that the card and the necessary driver are present at the
   places specified by the SOUND and BLASTER variables that are set
   in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file (see above).

IN-GAME ERRORS
==============

The Interspective System that has been used to create this game has a
complex in-game error-checking facility to determine any hardware
incompatibilities that occur during gameplay.
If you see any errors during the game, please contact your supplier
quoting the error number seen on screen.
