I have been to see Mrs. Forester today, and I do not know if
she, or her Fair Companion, or Mrs. Hudson has given me the
coldest looks for agreeing to Holmes's proposal to go with
Mortimer and Baskerville to Devonshire! Mrs. H. has spoken
openly of my Future Responsibilities and declared I should
spend my time looking for a new home and practice to support
my forthcoming status. The other ladies have said nothing -
which is still more damning! I do not rightly know why I did
consent to Holmes's plan - perhaps because he flattered for
once? I have announced my visit will be for a few days only.
They are not convinced.
