collector of Fairy Tales.  It was only when Mortimer produced a copy of
the "Devon County Chronicle" of May 14th of this year, with a short
account of the facts elicited at the death of Sir Charles Baskerville,
that Holmes's expression became more intent.
We learned from this the public facts - though Sir Charles had died in
strange circumstances, the Coroner's Jury had returned a verdict of death
from cardiac exhaustion. Mortimer then gave us the private facts, showing
signs of strong emotion and explaining to us that he had not yet confided
them to anyone else, not even at the Coroner's inquiry, for fear of
appearing superstitious or for causing Baskerville Hall to remain
untenanted by increasing its already rather grim reputation.
