She denied there was any connection between the two events, but
Holmes insisted that we should succeed in establishing the
connection, because he regarded the case as one of murder. The
evidence, he said, might implicate not only herself but some of
her friends.
When Holmes hinted at the names of those others whom he suspected,
Laura Lyons sprang from her seat, her eyes flashed and she challenged
us to prove it. Holmes drew several papers from his pocket. There was
a photograph, taken four years ago, indorsed "Mr. & Mrs. Vandeleur."
There were also some written descriptions by "trustworthy witnesses"
of the Vandeleurs. Laura Lyons had no difficulty in recognizing the
photographs & the descriptions, though at first they were obscure to
me. She looked at us with the set, rigid face of a desperate woman.
