Friday, 19th. October

Up early this morning, but Holmes afoot earlier still, for I saw him
as I dressed, coming up the drive. He had been to Grimpen already,
and he was rubbing his hands with the joy of action. He had sent
telegrams to Princetown, as to the death of Selden, so that we should
not be troubled any further with that matter, and to his faithful
Cartwright, to set the lad's mind at rest about his safety, and to
Scotland Yard in London.
"We should have a full day to-day," he said. "The nets are all in place,
and the drag is about to begin. We'll know before the day is out
whether we have caught our wily pike, or whether it has got through
the meshes."
