there was a lurking devil in his eyes. He had pictured Hugo as a
more robust & ruffianly person. The name & date, however, were on the
back of the canvas. The date was 1647. Holmes continued to glance
at the portrait during supper, but it was not until Sir Henry had gone
to his room that he allowed me to follow the trend of his thoughts. He
asked what I saw. I saw a broad-plumed hat, the curling love-locks, the
white lace collar, and the straight, severe face which was framed
between them. It was not brutal, but prim, hard & stern, with a firm-set,
thin-lipped mouth & a coldly intolerant eye. I saw something of Sir Henry
in the jaw.
Holmes stood upon a chair. Holding up the light in his left hand, he
curved his right arm over the broad hat & round the long ringlets.
I was amazed. At once another face appeared - a Baskerville to be sure.
