would not see his little dog again.
I took the chance to ask if he knew any woman within driving distance
whose initials were "L.L.". He thought for a moment and then
suggested the name of Laura Lyons, who lives at Coombe Tracey. She
is apparently the daughter of old Frankland the crank. She married
an artist named Lyons, who came sketching on the moor. He proved to
be a blackguard, and deserted her. Her father then refused to have
anything to do with her because she had married without his consent,
and perhaps for one or two other reasons as well. So, between the
old sinner & the young one, the girl had apparently had a pretty bad
time. I learned that Frankland allows her only a pittance, so several
neighbours, including Stapleton, Sir Charles & Mortimer, had helped
to set her up in a typewriting business to earn an honest living.
