Sir Henry, too, had heard Barrymore walking about the passages at night
two or three times recently and we determined to shadow the man. Sir
Henry evidently welcomed the adventure, for apart from his infatuation
with Miss Stapleton and the organization of the architects & decorators
up from Plymouth to restore the grandeur of the Hall, he finds life
somewhat quiet upon the moor. That same morning, however, it turned out
that the course of true love does not run quite as smoothly as one
would under the circumstances expect. (I could have taught Sir Henry
a thing or two myself about the ups & downs of love's fortune!) The
baronet decided to go for a walk on the moor. According to your strict
instruction, I prepared to go with him of course, but Sir Henry made it
quite clear that he wished to go out alone, broadly hinting that he did
not think you would have wished me to become a spoil-sport.
