unless he were to slaughter a sheep, so it is thought he has
got right away. The baronet displays a considerable interest in
the fair Miss Stapleton. There is something tropical & exotic
about her which forms a singular contrast to her cool &
unemotional brother. Yet he also gives the idea of hidden fires
and I have seen her continually glance at him as she talked as
if seeking approbation. He came over to the Hall on the first
day, and the next morning took us both on an excursion across
the moor to a dismal spot, with two great fang-like stones - the
site of the legend of the wicked Hugo. He was guarded about his
own attitude to the legend, but we inferred that he shared the
popular view.
We lunched at Merripit House, and Sir Henry was immediately
attracted to Miss Stapleton.  Since then hardly a day has passed 
that we have not seen something of the brother & sister.  They
dine here tonight and there is some talk of our going to them
