Walking, outings to the taverns, more walking, sleeping,
dreaming, eating, reading - what else is there to do?
Yesterday, Mortimer showed us the spot in the yew alley where
Sir Charles was found dead. Why did he not show us earlier?
I am convinced that Barrymore beats his wife. Is he a tyrant?
Despite her solid appearance, I have more than once observed
traces of tears on her face since that first night. What guilt
or misery haunts her? Perhaps he has a liaison with the
maidservant.
I have been up late trying to read Rider Haggard's stirring
tale of "She", published last year, but thinking instead of a
romantic adventure not in the world of fiction but here in
Devonshire in most material fact.
