Saturday, 6th October

Rode yesterday with Perkins, Mortimer and Sir Henry to
a number of taverns in the local villages of Gidleigh,
Manaton, Chagford and others. A most convivial day, which
enabled me to observe all three more closely, so long as I
was capable of observation!
My letters to Holmes remain unanswered, and we wonder
if it is the Ripper case that occupies him. He shows no
appreciation of my work here, and seems to forget that I
have better things to do in London, though I will confess
that Miss Stapleton's charms are not lost on me.
