Please note that this document will show DOS commands that reference a
computer's C: and D: drives. C: represents the hard drive you are
installing the game to, while D: represents your CD-ROM drive. They also
assume you are installing the game to the default directory of \STARCON2.
If your drives and/or installation directory are different than these,
please make the appropriate changes where needed.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS & GENERAL INFORMATION

Hard Drive with 12 MB free space, MCGA display adapter, 2x CD-ROM drive

  Recommended hardware:
386-20 MHz, VGA display adapter, Standard joystick

  Memory configuration:
DOS Real Mode, must have 580 KB free conventional RAM

  Installation program:
    INSTALL.EXE (on the CD)

  Default installation directory:
    C:\STARCON2

  Game executable:
    STARCON2.COM or MELEE.COM (for melee)
Run these from the hard drive, not the CD-ROM!

  Hardware configuration:
Hardware auto-detection will get it right most of the time, but you can
    force a configuration through a DOS command-line...

      STARCON2 [/G:BIOS] [/S:Sound]

/G (Graphics) Use the /G:BIOS parameter if you run the game, and the
                    screen's colors look strange.

/S (Sound) This will force the game to use the specified sound
                    driver. For example, STARCON2 /S:SBLASTER
The options are: SILENT (no sound), INTERNAL (PC
Internal Speaker), ADLIB (AdLib sound card), ASC (ASC
Media Master), GRAVIS (Gravis UltraSound), MICRO
(Microsoft Sound System), PAS (Pro Audio Spectrum),
SBLASTER (Sound Blaster), SM2 (Sound Master II),
DISNEY1 or DISNEY2 (Disney Sound Source on parallel port
#1 or #2), LPT1 or LPT2 (Covox Speech Thing or other
sound peripheral on parallel port #1 or #2)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. VIEWING THE MANUALS/STARMAP

There are two ways to view the manuals, either as an Adobe Acrobat (tm)
file, or as a text file. There is only one way to view the Starmap.
It is an Adobe Acrobat(tm) file.

  - To view the manuals and Starmap in Adobe Acrobat format, you must
first install the Adobe Acrobat Reader.

    Installing the Adobe Acrobat Reader...
Windows: Open the Acrobat folder on the CD, and double-click the
               INSTALL icon in the folder.
      DOS: Type: D: [Enter]
               Type: CD\ACROBAT [Enter]
               Type: INSTALL [Enter]

    Viewing Acrobat files...
Windows: Locate the Acrobat file you wish to view (its name may end
with a PDF extension), and double-click it.
      DOS: Type: C: [Enter]
               Type: CD\ACRODOS [Enter]
               Type: ACROMAIN [Enter]
From the "Open" window, choose the CD-ROM drive
               Double-click the MANUALS folder
Double-click the manual or starmap file you wish to view

NOTE: The starmap has been included to help players find their way
through the Star Control universe. It prints out on many pages
that can be taped together to form one gigantic and complete
map of all the systems in the game.

  - To view the manuals in text format...
Windows: Locate the text file you wish to view (its name may end
with a TXT extension), and double-click it.
      DOS: Type: D: [Enter]
               Type: CD\STARCON2\MANUAL [Enter]
               Type: MANUAL [Enter]

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. INSTALLATION

  To install the game:
    (a) If you are in Windows, go to DOS.
    (b) Type: D: [Enter]
    (c) Type: INSTALL [Enter]
    (d) Follow the on-screen instructions.

Any problems installing the game whatsoever:
You can manually install the game by doing the following from DOS...
    (a) If you are in Windows, go to DOS.
    (b) Type: C: [Enter]
    (c) Type: MD \STARCON2 [Enter]
    (d) Type: XCOPY D:\STARCON2\*.* C:\STARCON2 /S [Enter]

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. STARTING UP

  To play the game:
    (a) If you are in Windows, go to DOS (shut down to MS-DOS mode do not use
a MS DOS prompt in Windows).
    (b) Type: C: [Enter]
    (c) Type: CD\STARCON2 [Enter]
    (d) Type: STARCON2 [Enter]

  To run Melee:
    (a) If you are in Windows, go to DOS (shut down to MS-DOS mode do not use
a MS DOS prompt in Windows).
    (b) Type: C: [Enter]
    (c) Type: CD\STARCON2 [Enter]
    (d) Type: MELEE [Enter]

You are told that you don't have enough memory to run the game:
Boot clean, as described in section "10. BOOTING CLEAN" below. You can
also use EMM386, DEVICEHIGH, and LOADHIGH to load drivers into upper
memory. Once the CD version has been installed to the hard drive, the
CD is no longer needed for play; the CD-ROM drivers may be left out to
    free up more memory.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. GAMEPLAY PROBLEMS

Game crashes when trying to land on a planet:
You may not have enough conventional memory free. Try making a boot disk
with the "accoboot" program located on the root directory of the disc.

Game starts but skips the intro:
Again, you may not have enough conventional memory free. Try making a boot
    disk

  Using caching programs:
Do not have SmartDrive or any other disk-caching software loaded when
running the game. Boot clean (see section "10. BOOTING CLEAN" below)
without them. You may be able to tell if you have one loaded by saving
a game. If it does not save immediately, boot clean without the caching
    program.

  Leaving the game:
You must exit the game properly. Do not turn off the power or reset
the computer while the game is in progress; this can mess up the game.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
6. VIDEO PROBLEMS

All of the graphics colors are wrong/messed up:
Run the game with the command: STARCON2 /G:BIOS [Enter]

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
7. SOUND PROBLEMS

You are having sound problems with your Pro Audio Spectrum/Studio 16:
Type the following commands from DOS...

      COPY D:\PATCHES\*.* C:\STARCON2 [Enter]
      FIX [Enter]

To run the game or Melee from now on, make sure the following command
lines are present in your CONFIG.SYS file...
    - DOS=HIGH,UMB
    - The HIMEM.SYS line
    - The MVSOUND.SYS line (Pro Audio sound card driver)

And use the following DOS command lines to run the game or Melee...

      STARCON2 /S:SBLASTER [Enter]
      MELEE /S:SBLASTER [Enter]

You are having sound problems with your Orchid SoundWave 32:
Run the game with the command: STARCON2 /S:MICRO [Enter]

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
8. CONTROLS PROBLEMS

When using a joystick in Melee, your ship constantly spins to the right:
    Things to try...
    - Do not play with the joystick while the game loads. While loading,
the game automatically calibrates the joystick, and if it is not
centered, its calibration will be thrown off.
    - 486 and faster machines sometimes have problems with standard,
fixed-speed gameports, throwing off the gameports' timing. Installing
      an adjustable-speed gamecard will help.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
9. PATCHES AND SUPPLEMENTAL FILES

  \PATCHES\*.*
Allows the SoundMan 16, MediaVision Pro Audio Spectrum/Studio 16-bit
sound cards to work properly with the game.
To install this patch, go to DOS, and type:
      C: [Enter]
      CD\STARCON2 [Enter]
      COPY D:\PATCHES\*.* [Enter]
      FIX [Enter]

See section "7. SOUND PROBLEMS" above for more details on running the
    game after installing this patch.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
10. BOOTING CLEAN

You can boot your PC clean in one of the following ways...

  - Make a boot disk with the ACCOBOOT program, included in the root
    directory of the CD.

  - If your computer boots up with a "Starting MS-DOS..." or "Starting
Windows 95..." message, press the [F8] key as soon as you see this
message. From the menu, select "Step-by-step confirmation". Answer "Y"
to CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, sound commands, mouse commands, joystick
commands, the PROMPT command, PATH commands, and anything else your
computer requires to run. Answer "N" to everything else.

  - Manually make a boot disk with no CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT files...

    (a) If you are in Windows 3.1, exit it completely. If you are in
Windows 95, select "Start", "Shut Down...", "Restart the computer in
MS-DOS mode", and then "Yes". Either way, you should end up at a
        DOS prompt.

    (b) Find a blank high-density diskette that will fit in your computer's
A: drive. Please note that the following procedure will erase all
        information from the diskette.

    (c) Type: C: [Enter]
        Type: CD\ [Enter]
        Type: FORMAT A: /S [Enter]
This will ask you to insert a diskette in your A: drive. Use the
one you found in step (b). When the diskette finishes formatting,
it will ask you for a disk label; just press [Enter]. Then it will
ask you if you want to format another diskette; answer N.

If all went well, your boot disk should now be ready for use.

  Using the boot disk...
  (a) Insert the boot disk into your A: drive

  (b) Turn on your computer, or if it's already powered up, restart it...
Windows 95: Click "Start", "Shut Down...", "Restart the computer",
                   and "Yes".
Windows 3.1: Exit Windows and follow the DOS instructions below.
DOS: Press the RESET button on your computer (if it is
equipped with one), or by press the [Ctrl] [Alt] and
[Delete] keys all at the same time.

While the computer starts, you will see various messages about
programs being loaded from your boot disk. When it finishes, you will
likely see a DOS prompt looking something like this:

      A:\>

  (c) Follow the directions for starting Star Control II as described
  in section "4. STARTING UP".
