Worried that your typing skills have degenerated since high
school?  Or that you never really had any formal training (i.e.,
that you're a graduate of Hunt and Peck University)?  Wishing you
had the time to teach your kids to type or that you could think
up a way to keep them interested long enough to learn?

Typing Attack is a typing tutor disguised as a really fun and
addictive game.  The concept is simple:  the enemy alphabet is
attacking the city and you must protect it by shooting down each
letter.  You shoot letters by correctly typing them.

You are only allowed to make nine misses--a tenth one means the
alphabet wins. Nine misses sounds like a lot (unless you're a
really bad typist), but the alphabet advances faster and faster
as the game progresses. You'll soon be typing like mad as you try
to survive the alphabet onslaught.

Here's a little touch typing refresher on which keys to press
with what fingers. We've also included some practice words and
sentences for novice typists.


^C"TYPING 101" REFRESHER COURSE
In order to learn to touch type, it is important that you
discipline yourself to hit the right keys with the right fingers.
Your four left-hand fingers rest on and press the following keys
(left home row): a, s, d and f.

Your four right-hand fingers rest on and press the following keys
(right home row): j, k, l and semi-colon.

Your thumbs (use both or either--whichever is most comfortable)
rest on and press the space bar.

Your left index finger also presses these keys:
   v, b, g, r, t, 4 and 5.

Your left middle finger also presses these keys:
   c, e and 3.

Your left ring finger also presses these keys:
   x, w and 2.

Your left pinkie also presses these keys:
   z, q and 1.

Your right index finger also presses these keys:
   m, n, h, u, y, 6 and 7.

Your right middle finger also presses these keys:
   comma, i and 8.

Your right ring finger also presses:
   the period, o and 9.

Your right pinkie also presses these keys:
   question mark, apostrophe/quotation marks, p, 0, - and +.

Although the following keys are not used in Typing Attack, press
them with the appropriate pinkie when typing. They are:  return
(enter), shift (for capital letters), caps lock, tab and back
space (delete).

Home Row Practice Words (for the beginner):  sad; dad; fad; glad:
flash; lad, gash: halls; jag; flask; lass; dash; gas; had: flag.
(Repeat, including punctuation, until you are comfortable with
the location of the keys under your fingers, then practice typing
the words without looking at the keyboard.

When you can type the entire string of words without looking at
the keyboard and without making more than four mistakes, move to
the next section.  Hint: when necessary, press the shift key,
press it with the pinkie on the hand opposite the one typing the
shift character.)

Bottom Row Practice Words (for the beginner):  jazz, lax, jacks,
van, man, balk, slack, ax, chalk, back, lab, vassal, mix, sack,
man's?, ham, can. (Repeat per above instructions.)

Top (Alphabet) Row Practice Words (for the beginner):  queen,
wind,  earn, river, tired, you, until, inside, outside, punctual,
while, quest, right, tight, yours, time, even, then, it, puts,
over, that, the, vacation. (Repeat per above instructions.)

Number Row Practice Numbers (for the beginner):  1, 2, 3, 4, 5,
6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 29, 20, 166, 189,
1990, 1992, 1,224, $24.95, 35!, *80, 33%, #25, @1990-92, @
$55.50, (1962). (Repeat per above instructions but be sure to
move your fingers into home row position after typing each letter
or group of letters.  This will enable you to type the next
number with the correct finger).

Practice Sentences:  In the 1990s, the library will be considered
the most treasured room in the average home.  When you exercise
your creativity, anything is possible.  Follow these steps:
1) Print your full name and address; 2) Read every question 
carefully; 3) Circle the correct answer; and 4) Erase the cards 
by June 1, 1992.  5) Ignore all steps except the first two.
