DESCRIPTION:
Gravity Wars is a two player game in which opponents take turns
firing projectiles at each other's ship. An arrangement of "planets"
is placed in "space" between the ships, and the resulting gravitational
field effects the path of the projectile as it travels through the
"space" of the playing field. The player can enter the initial velocity
and angle of each projectile firing, then watch as the gravitation
attraction of the planets pulls the projectile toward a collision with
a planet, a collision with a ship, or a path out of the "galaxy."
For practice, Gravity Wars can be set to single-player mode, in which a single
ship fires repeatedly at the other ship.

REQUIREMENTS:
Gravity Wars should run on most MS-DOS compatible systems with
512K or more of memory, and color EGA or VGA display. An 8MHz AT, or faster
machine is recommended.

USAGE:
The Gravity Wars program is named GWARS.EXE, and can be run
by placing the program disk into (ie) drive A: and typing "A:GWARS"
from your DOS prompt.
The Prompt-bar at the top of the screen requests each user, in
turn, to enter a velocity and firing angle. The orbiting of the projectile
can be stopped at any time the projectile is moving, by striking any key.
When the shot is interrupted, it becomes the other player's move.
The Cursor-arrow keys are used to move through the menus. Use the
UP-ARROW key (or F10) to bring up the menus, then the other Cursor keys to
move to your selection. Once at your selection, depress the ENTER key.
If the menu item requires additional information, you will be prompted.
At any time, while playing Gravity Wars, if you wish to exit the
program quickly, you can use the ESCAPE key (sometimes this requires more
then one keypress). (You can also Exit from the menus.) If a menu is open,
pressing ESCAPE will also let you back out of the menu.

IF YOU DON'T GET SOUND:
If you have a fast machine, the timing for the explosion sound effects
might render them too fast or inaudible. To slow the sound output down,
instead of typing
	GWARS
add a command line switch of the form:
	GWARS /s:nnnn
where nnnn is an integer (probably no greater than 10 or 20). You can try
increasing this integer until the individual notes that make up the explosions
are heard. Then, decrease the setting so that the individual notes are not
heard, and the effect sounds more like an explosion.

TO SLOW DOWN PROJECTILES:
If you have a fast machine, and the projectiles move too quickly, you
can slow the projectiles by including the command line switch:
	/d:nnnn
Higher values for nnnn give slower projectiles (probably never needs to be
greater than 100).

DISTRIBUTION:
The Gravity Wars disk contains this "read.me" file, and the
executable program file named "gwars.exe."
[Changed November 1996]
Gravity Wars was originally distributed as share-ware. It is now
available free to use. Just don't claim that your wrote it, and do not
sell it (except for including it on shareware game CDROM/disk collections
were a small fee is charged) as your own.

HISTORY:
Gravity Wars (for DOS) is similar to Gravity Wars for the
Commodore Amiga, but has been independently developed, with the consent
of the author. Gravity Wars (for DOS) dates back to a copy I initially
wrote in 1984, which ran on a DEC PDP-10 computer.

This file, READ.ME, is the file which is distributed with
Gravity Wars version 1.0a. Gravity Wars displays the version number
in the Info-Help screen. GWARS has been tested with MS-DOS 3.3 and 5.0.

Version 1.0a adds command-line parameter for slowing down sound
output and projectile speed.

Gravity Wars comes with no warranty, either express or implied,
for any particular purpose. In no event shall the Author of Gravity Wars
(for DOS) be liable for any damages whatsoever, arising from the use
or misuse of this software.
