shipping and handling charge of $2. Send your check or money
order to OR Concepts Applied, 6721 S. Washington Avenue, Suite

Q: What is Fencing?
A: The Game of Fencing (as it is more properly called) has
nothing to do with swords or the sport of fencing. The Game
of Fencing is a game of strategy invented by the famous
English science fiction author, John Brunner, and described in
the novel titled The Shockwave Rider. The object of the game
is to control more area than your opponent by the clever
placement of visible and concealed points, and the intelligent
      and timely construction of triangles.

Q: How else to describe Fencing?
A: Fencing is a board game played by two players. The board is
formed by 71 vertical lines crossed by 101 horizontal lines.
Each intersection is a coordinate point where a visible or
concealed point may be placed. Each player tries to control
area by drawing triangles that exclude opponent points.

Q: Why is Fencing computerized?
A: It is not practical to play Fencing without a computer. Just
figuring out the score of each triangle is hard enough without
a computer. Keeping track of concealed points and testing for
legal triangles is best left to the computer.

Q: How old is Fencing?
A: Fencing was first described in 1975 in The Shockwave Rider,
however, the lack of a computerized version has prevented all
but the most ambitious from ever playing. Moreover, the
graphics needed to adequately represent the game was extremely
expensive until just recently. OR Concepts Applied has
written the first and only computerized version of the Game of
Fencing. Version 1.0 of the software was made available in
      June of 1990.

Q: What kind of computer do I need to play?
A: Fencing will run on most IBM compatible DOS machines that
support EGA or VGA graphics. It is recommended that you have
      at least 256K of memory.

Q: How many can play?
A: Fencing is a game for two people, however, the software will
let you play with another person or with the computer. You
can even let the computer play itself.

Q: How good is the Computer player?
A: The computer player has five levels, from Novice to Master.

Q: Do you take credit cards?
A: Not yet. We can ship COD via U.S. Mail or order by mail with
a personal check or money order.

Q: How can I find out more?
A: You can join the National Association of Players at the Game
of Fencing for $15/year. A newsletter is published every
other month that contains hints and tips as well as scores of
the games. A notation has been invented for recording games
and is part of the SAVE function in the computerized game.
