COMPUTER CRYPTOGRAPHER is a word puzzle game for cryptogram enthusiasts.
The object of the game is to solve the puzzle by substituting the correct
letters for the encryption letters. Doing so, with as few clues as possible,
is the reward. Although several features in COMPUTER CRYPTOGRAPHER improve on
the pencil and paper method, those who prefer working the puzzles on paper can
print the cryptogram with the blank solution at any time by pressing <F7>.

Cryptograms are selected from a file and letters are randomly substituted
in the quotations. For instance, an "O" may be substituted for an "A;" a "T"
substituted for a "B." You try and guess the quotation by substituting
letters in the cryptogram. When the file of quotations has been exhausted,
the program returns to the beginning of the COMPUTER CRYPTOGRAPHER file and
 starts all over again.

There are over 100 cryptograms from authors both present and past on the
file for COMPUTER CRYPTOGRAPHER. Part of the fun is in remembering that
common usage of words and quotes may not accurately reflect the original!

                             The Playing Screen

The COMPUTER CRYPTOGRAPHER playing screen has four sections. The
cryptogram is located at the top of the screen. The Work Board is below the
cryptogram - blank spaces where letters can be substituted into the
cryptogram. The third section has an Alphabet Box which keeps track of the
letters used in each round; two command boxes - Move & Delete; and a Clue Box
with the number of remaining clues. At the bottom of the screen are the
function key commands. The yellow commands are current; those appearing in
blue can be used at other times. As you play, the available commands will
 change. The commands include:

          F1=NEW -  Start a new game.
         F2=SAVE -  Save a game.
F3=RESTORE - Bring back the game you have saved.
F4=CLUE - View the location of any letter you choose.

F5=REVEAL - Translate the cryptogram if you can't solve it.
F6=DONE - Check to see if your cryptogram is correct.
        F7=PRINT -  Print the cryptogram.
F8=QUIT - Exit to Big Blue Disk Main Menu.

                               Getting Started

Begin the game by pressing <F1>. The cryptogram and Work Board are
entered; the function keys change color. You can type in letters at this
point. Beneath the original cryptogram, placeholders appear for each letter.
All spaces and punctuation marks appear as they do in the original cryptogram.
The cursor moves from one placeholder to another, skipping spaces and
punctuation marks. The <ARROW KEYS> move the cursor from blank to blank. The
<DEL> key removes a letter if you change your mind.

When you type in a letter, it appears at the cursor location as well as any
other location containing the same code letter. Typing a letter inserts that
letter at the cursor location, even if a letter is already located there. If
you type a letter over another one, the program erases the typed over letter
from ALL locations in the Work Board. If you delete a letter, the program
deletes the letter wherever it appears.

The Alphabet Box, located in the lefthand corner of the third section,
keeps track of the letters used in each cryptogram. Letters you have used are
darkened; unused letters are shown in red. Delete a letter and it returns
to red in the Alphabet Box. Those letters appearing in green are those
revealed with a clue; therefore, they are correct.

                                    Clues

Five clues are available for each cryptogram. A clue gives the location of
a specified letter. Press <F4> for a clue; you will be prompted to choose a
letter. That letter is revealed wherever it appears in the quotation. Using
all 5 clues makes guessing the rest of the quotation easier so use them
sparingly. The Clue Box, located in the righthand corner of the third
section, tells you the number of clues remaining.

                                  Features

Save a cryptogram at any time with <F2>. To bring back a cryptogram that
has been saved, press <F3>. For those who like to use pencil and paper, <F7>
will print a cryptogram at any point in a game.

If you cannot figure out the cryptogram, <F5> reveals the answer. When you
feel you have figured out the cryptogram, press <F6>.

<F8> exits COMPUTER CRYPTOGRAPHER to the Big Blue Disk Main Menu.
