1 CONTROL KEYS

<F1> -- This is the NXL booster launch button. Following other setup
procedures the NXL is launched by the operator with this key.

<F3> -- After booster launch this key will trigger detonation of the NXL device
at the operator's discretion.

<F5> -- Change the background and palette colors (Color Graphics Adaptor).

<F7> -- Returns the terminal monitor to the Control Screen from any display and
acknowledges alarms Operator commands must be input to the Control Screen.

<End> -- Abandons S.D.I. - Microlink is broken and control is transferred to
the MS/PC DOS.

"?" or "/" -- Access online operation instructions.

Note: Before HQ can respond you must enter a microlink designation (MAP04)
and activate it by entering 'AA001'.

2 DEFCON 4 -- SPACEMINE INCURSION

Code INF06 activates the satellite trackquadrant grid. Keys <F1> and <F2> scan
the orbital quadrants back and forth. Key <F4> toggles between the quadrant
and the quadrant map.

A spacemine travels sequentially through the quadrants. Passing quadrant 19 it
will impact a space weapon. A nearby ASM must be located and sent guidance
data to rendezvous with the mine. One of the 2-digit numbers around the screen

should be entered to send the ASM in that direction. The ASM must stay within
the designated areas of the map or it will leave orbit and be lost. Once
contact is made the video camera on the ASM will send an image.

3 DEFUSING SPACEMINES

The Articulated Robot Manipulator is equipped with four jets - one on each
of its four sides. The arrow keys are used to activate these jets. Push the
up-arrow to activate the top jet, down-arrow to activate the bottom jet, left-
arrow to activate the left jet, and right-arrow to activate the right jet.
Velocity of the mine may be increased/decreased by repeatedly pressing an
arrow key. Mines exist beyond the edges of the screen so remain within the
screen perimeters.

Mines are defused by 'punching' the mine's 'trip pin' located at the bottom
and the top of each mine. Maneuver the ARM slightly above or below the mine
and press the <F1> function key to punch. Punching one of the mines pins will
cause the mine to stop for 60 seconds and punching the other pin will stop the
mine permanently. Touching any part of the mine other than the pin will
cause detonation. Live mines home-in on the ASM platform and will detonate
upon contact.

After the third unsuccessful attempt to defuse all the mines, several
weapons will be destroyed. GOOD LUCK!

 4 DEFCON 3 - INTERCEPTOR ATTACK
Interceptors are launched against low orbit space weapons (FEL, EML, NPB).
If defenses are not initiated immediately weapon(s) may be destroyed. The
number of interceptors can be viewed on the control screen (TRACES). Access
the MTI schedule to determine a functional MTI. If an MTI had been previously
activated it will be indicated by green characters. Enter the MTI designation
at the control screen. Any operational weapon (which is in the same sector as
the selected MTI) may be selected randomly to protect. Enter the weapon
designation at the control screen and then access the VRS schedule to locate
the sector. Call up the imaging satellite. The MTI will automatically be
dispatched to the sector if designations were entered correctly. Control the
weapon with the arrow keys to maneuver out of the way of the attack rockets
while the MTI attempts to shoot them down. The MTI is programmed to fire at
anything it tracks so avoid maneuvering a weapon in its line of fire (If it
looks as though danger is threatening a weapon, go to the control screen and
reenter designations). Fire the weapon by pressing the 'F' key. If the weapon
and the MTI collide then both will be destroyed. Each MTI is equipped with a
number of Anti-Missile Shields (AMS). Each time an MTI is struck by either a
missile or fired at by a weapon the number of AMS will be decreased and the
MTI
will be destroyed if there are no AMS. The interceptors will track the weapon
if there is one, otherwise they will track the MTI.If the weapon and/or MTI is
hit select another. The attack continues until all interceptors are eliminated.
 5 DEFCON 2 - LAUNCH DETECTED

Access MAP05 to locate USSR launch site sectors and note the longitude and
latitude of the site for targeting. Access the OLR schedule for the GCL/OLR
combination for the sector. At the control screen enter the GCL and OLR
designations in that order. Then access the imaging schedule for the VRS
designation and image sector.

The OLR is automatically moving to its targeting location. When it stops
use the arrow keys to control the laser alignment mechanism. The longitude and
latitude are displayed on the screen. Use the left and right arrow keys to
adjust the OLR for the desired longitude and use the up and down arrow keys to
adjust for the latitude. When you believe you are on target, initiate liaising
with the <F1> function key. The launch sites are not visible at this altitude
but an explosion can be seen. MAP05 will graphically indicate your success or
failure. This action is available only during boost phase (which is short). HQ
will not authorize this action at any other time. Destroy as many USSR launch
sites as possible by repeating the procedures defined above.

6 ICBM COUNTERMEASURES

During the period between the end of the boost phase and violation of U.S.
airspace, enemy ICBM's ar in low earth orbit and are dealt with by free
electron lasers, electro-magnetic launchers and neutral-particle beam weapons.

The first half of this phase can be tracked on MAP02 and the second half on
MAP01. The radar tracking maps will display radar 'blips' for each group of
ICBM's. Select a weapon and then access the VRS schedule (INF01). Enter the
VRS designation at the control screen (HINT: If radar indicates ICBM's are in
the North-Eastern area of the earth, for example, then select a weapon and VRS
designation appropriately).

Fire at the ICBM's using the 'F' key and control the direction of the
weapon with the arrow keys. Avoid collision with missiles and ICBM's.

7 DEFCON 1 - X-RAY LASER LAUNCH

When U.S. airspace is violated by ICBM's, a defense condition one will be
called (The notification and alarm will appear on the control screen only).
MAP01 will display the violated sector(s). If a blip on MAP01 appears to be
stationary then you can assume ICBM's are on a vertical descent at that
location. It is at that time and not before when you should prepare an NXL for
launch.

The NXL launch site can be found in schedule INF08. Enter the designation
at the Control Screen. If the NXL is available (not destroyed nor previously
launched) then launch it at your discretion by pressing the <F1> function key
or abort the launch by pressing <F7>. VRS designation NW01 will automatically
send an image. You will be informed if the NXL is totally 'off the mark'.

An altitude indicator for both the ICBM's and the NXL will appear. Monitor
the relative altitudes. At a difference of less than 100 meters press <F3> to
detonate the NXL. If the altitudes were correct the X-RAY blast should
completely neutralize the sector.
