tie-ran-o-SORE-us Rex TYRANNOSAURUS REX [King of the Tyrant Lizards]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tyrannosaurus Rex was certainly the ultimate "lean, mean, killing
machine" ever devised by nature. The giant carnivore could swallow more
meat in one mouthful than a human family of four would eat in two months.
The Tyrannosaurus lived in North America during the end of the Cretaceous
Period about 70 million years ago. It was the largest carnivore that ever
lived on land. Everything about it was designed to efficiently kill its prey.
The Tyrannosaurus stood over twenty feet tall and weighed over five tons.
Its teeth were long, thick and razor sharp. They were also strong enough to
allow the giant predator to bite through the tough hides of its victims.
The Tyrannosaurus also had a small snout that allowed for overlapping
fields of vision. This enabled the Tyrannosaurus to have "stereoscopic
vision" to more accurately judge distances during an attack.
While the Tyrannosaurus had very powerful hind legs for running, its
forelimbs were weak, worthless appendages. A daring or foolish human might
have beaten a Tyrannosaurus at arm wrestling.
