------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Coelophysis is a very old dinosaur from the Triassic Period. It
walked upright on its hind legs and held its long tail straight out behind
itself.
The bones of the Coelophysis were hollow (like a modern bird's) and
the entire dinosaur weighed only about 150 pounds. It was very fast and must
have resembled a roadrunner as it dashed about.
The Coelophysis was a carnivore and ate small amphibians, lizards,
mammals and insects. Many Coelophysis footprints have been found
together, leading paleontologists to believe that they lived in herds.
Skeletons of entire families have been found together in New Mexico. This
also indicates that the young Coelophysis traveled with the adults.
