QUESTIONS ABOUT A GAME THAT YOU DO NOT KNOW
============================================

Q. Jet Set Willy?! What's that?
A. Jet Set Willy was a legendary platform game originally made for the
Sinclair ZX Spectrum. It was released in 1983 by Matthew Smith, the genius
who made an earlier game called Manic Miner, an extremely popular platformer.
Matthew took the Manic Miner idea and turned it from a single screen arcade game
(think Donkey Kong) into a huge flick screen adventure. The premise was
simple, explore through the sixty screens and collect all the items before
the time runs out. What made the game so great though was that exploration
often became more important than the game's objective as it was so huge. The
game's graphic design was also very impressive (and yet bizarre) for the
time as it made the ZX Spectrum look as though it was using more colour than
it was capable of. No doubt, it helped inspire just about every flick screen
platformer that was released thereafter. JSW was also incredibly difficult
but extremely addictive.

Q. That's all well and good but what is Jet Set Willy II - The Final
Frontier?
A. Jet Set Willy II - The Final Frontier was the first and only official
sequel of JSW. The idea of the game is exactly the same, find and collect all of
the items in Willy's mansion. However this time, the amount of screens has been
more than doubled adding up to over 130 rooms! Also, this time Willy travels into
space!

The reason that this sequel was made is a very interesting one... When JSW was
converted to the Amstrad CPC, the converters decided to create 70+ brand new rooms.
Software Projects decided that this new version of JSW was good enough to be known
as Jet Set Willy II and so, this new version was converted BACK to the Spectrum
and many other machines.

JSW 2 didn't recieve the critical acclaim the original did, perhaps because
the game is so similar to it. But for JSW fans the new 70 odd screens made
it the ultimate version of the game. Also, it never had the bug(s) that made
the original impossible to finish... if you were willing to stick with the thing
for THAT long.

Anyway, thanks to DIV we've been able to remake the whole thing.

Q. What's DIV?
A. The game creator programme, used to make the definitive version of JSW 2!

Q. Bah! Definitive version of JSW 2?! You gotta be kidding me!
A. What were you expecting? 3D graphics, surround sound, lighting effects?

Q. Well, um...
A. That wasn't what JSW 1 or 2 was about. This is the same deal as with what
Andy Noble did with the original JSW and what Danny did with Monty On The Run.
Take it, colour it up, add whatever you want options and extras wise but don't
over do it so that you've lost the original game. This is JSW 2 the way it was
originally, perhaps the way it would have been if there had been a PC version
back in 1984. This is about retaining what made it so great in
the first place, the gameplay.

Q. Andy Noble?
A. He did JSW PC and a damn fine job he did. If you want to play the original
the only way to go is his version (you can actually complete that version too.
No, really! <g>). I can't deny that JSW PC helped inspire JSW 2 PC.

QUESTIONS ABOUT A GAME THAT YOU DO KNOW
=======================================

Q. Okay, so maybe your version is kinda cool. But wasn't the Amiga JSW 2
the definitive version?
A. No, I don't think so. The Amiga version came out much later than the others
since the Amiga was a next generation home computer and never even existed in 1984.
JSW 2 was already old when it was developed for the Amiga, and no one really wanted
to play Spectrum games anymore. Especially at a time when arcade conversions were
all the rage. All the graphics in JSW 2 were completely changed, made much bigger
making the visible playing field smaller and the whole thing looked like a typical
platform console game. That's not to say that it was bad because it certainly
wasn't, it's just that the whole thing didn't retain any of JSW's classic
gameplay at all and was probably changed so much just to show off (what was
at the time) fancy graphics. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that Matthew
Smith would have been appauled <g>. What we have in JSW 2 PC is what
perhaps the Amiga version could and SHOULD have been like.

Q. Okay, but why should I play your version of JSW 2 over another emulated version?
A. Well, not only does our version take the original, add 256 colour graphics,
full quality audio and special effects never seen in the originalbut it takes all
the best ideas from the different versions of the game and puts them together
(or at least, that was the plan :-)). JSW II was especially different on the
Commodore 64 version when compared to the other versions that came out in 1984,
so what we've done here is added both versions together to create The Final
Frontier PC!

Q. What WAS so different then?
A. It seems that when Software Projects came to do the C64 version they
decided to add and change various things. There were subtle differences such
as the slightly altered screens. For example, the second screen in the
game was known as "Dumb Waiter" but in the C64 version they replaced the
room's only guardian with a space man and the room became known as "Dumb
Jetman".

Also, the C64 version had wider screens...

Q. Hang on! JSW 2 PC doesn't seem to have any of that!
A. Erm, you're half right. The idea of the wider playing field was scrapped
after an early version when we realised that this slowed down the game too much.
Look at the Spectrum and Amstrad versions for example and you'll see how much
faster the game is, even when compared to JSW 1. We hope you'll agree that using
the same sized screens as found in JSW 1 and every other original version of JSW 2
works much better. If you want to play the game at a slower pace, don't fret because
we've added an option to change the game's speed.

As for the subtle differences in rooms, the C64 versions ARE in JSW 2 PC
BUT they're hidden!

Q. How do I get them on?!
A. You're gonna have to figure that out for yourself.

Q. Couldn't you go down the toilet in the C64 version? Why can't I do that in JSW 2
PC?!
A. Yes you could and yes you can! What you gotta do is work out how to turn
"The Bathroom" into the C64 version of the screen, which was and is known as
"The Bathroom (With Purple Bath)". THEN you'll be able to go down the toilet
(but why you would want to do this so badly is beyond me :-))

Q. Hey! Wasn't there a timer?!
A. Unlike the first game there was no time limit in JSW 2, just a timer telling the player
how long they had been playing for. In JSW 2 PC the timer is gone because it served no real
purpose.

Q. Fair enough I suppose. Does JSW 2 PC still have that hidden screen?! What's it
called?
A. That'll be "The Desert Isle". In the original game you had to switch "The Trip
Switch" on and get to "The Bow". If you died on the way there, "The Trip Switch"
was switched off and you had to go back and turn it on again until you made it
without dying. It was virtually impossible to reach unless you had an invinsibility
cheat so we've added a second alternative way of getting there in JSW 2 PC.

Q. Great! What about cheats?! Are there any cheats in JSW 2 PC?!
A. There may well be <g>.

Q. Ooooh! That's great, now where was... Oh yeah! What about that other
screen? That was weird. You were in space I think and every time I checked it
there was a different amount of blocks in it or something... You do know what I'm
talking about?
A. That'll be the "Catography Room". In the original JSW 2, every time Willy
enters a room a block is placed in the "Catography Room". That does not happen
in JSW 2 PC. Instead, the room will be filled with an amount of blocks depending on
how many items you have collected. We feel that this rewards the player who is
actually good at the game rather than the player who has visited the most
rooms.

Q. There sure were a lot of rooms and items to collect in that game. I never completed
it, even with a cheat on because it was big! Have you sorted this out in JSW 2 PC?
A. Yes, we have. There is now a save feature, which means that it is now VERY
possible to complete JSW 2 without cheating.

Q. All right! It's a shame you haven't added even more new stuff, maybe extra
options and hidden stuff...
A. We have! There's the usual yet new title and option screens. Then there are
hidden options, screens, quirks and all kinds of things that as I said earlier,
you're going to have to find for yourself! We've also added something that
Matthew Smith wanted to add to the original JSW but never got round to doing.

Q. What?! PLEASE tell me!
A. No, I shan't be doing that...

Q. Ooooooh! Please!
A. Well... Let's just say... Um... Esmarelda...

Q. Esma...? Okay. I think I read something about that once... Maybe... Anyway,
the game sounds great and all but I'm not really into games I played when I was five.
I think I'll go back to my PS2... Later!
A. Well, I guess you can't win everybody <g>.
