---------------
1. Introduction
---------------
Invaders is a PC shareware version of the classic arcade game. You
know the idea: swarms of aliens are attacking Earth and you must
defend it using your limited supply of space attack ships. The
seminal coin-op of yesteryear has been reproduced with every detail
intact - crumbly shields overhead, sleek flying saucers scanning the
land below, lasers whizzing about at high speed. Read on...

---------------
2. Requirements
---------------
In order to run Invaders, you need:

100% compatible 386 PC or better
MS-DOS 3.3 (or equivalent) or higher
  VGA/MCGA graphics card or better
Approximately 115 kbytes (0.115 Mbytes) of free disk space
A Soundblaster, Adlib or compatible sound card is recommended

Invaders can be run from Windows but it is recommended that you close
as many programs - particularly any games - as possible before doing so.
Invaders will probably not run at optimum speed (or may not run properly
at all) if run at the same time as other games.

To achieve maximum animation quality when running Invaders from Windows,
use full screen mode. Pressing Alt and Enter toggles between full screen
and partial screen mode.

----------
3. Playing
----------
Protect the Earth from the alien invaders by firing lasers at them
all before they land. You have three ships at your disposal, each of
which has an unlimited supply of lasers. Only one laser can be fired
at a time. If one of your ships is hit by an alien laser, it is
destroyed. A new ship flashes to indicate temporary invincibility
from alien lasers. Green shields provide limited protection from the
alien lasers. You fail if the aliens land, touch you or destroy all
of your ships.

Different alien breeds give different points when shot. Shoot the
blue flying saucers at high altitudes for 50 bonus points. An extra
ship is awarded when your score reaches 5000, 10000, 15000 and so on.

If you have a high score when your game is over, you will be asked
to join the Invaders Hall Of Fame. Type your name in the box when
it appears. You can use the up cursor key and down cursor key to
recall previous names if you don't want to type your name again. To
reset the table and go back to the default Invaders table, delete the
HISCORES.DAT file. You could do this to spite someone else who has
a higher score than you, but that wouldn't be a very sporting thing
to do.

-----------
4. Controls
-----------
Your ship is controlled with the keyboard. Pick your favourite
combination of keys from the choices below:

MOVE LEFT MOVE RIGHT FIRE LASER
left cursor key right cursor key up cursor key
       q w Alt
       o p Ctrl
       z x Space

Any combination of the above can be used. Most people seem to prefer
the left, right and up cursor keys.

Also:
Pause/Break to pause and unpause the game
Esc to quit the game.

5. Registration
---------------
Once you have given this unregistered version of Invaders a decent
test drive, it is time to decide whether you want to register it and
continue playing. There is nothing complicated about registering
shareware software - it simply means buying the full version if you
find the trial version satisfactory.

The benefits associated with registering Invaders are:

o The fully fledged registered version of Invaders on a disk

o The full complement of 15 levels of alien-blasting fun (the
   unregistered version has 9 levels)

o A full bonus game called Buff - puzzling, absorbing, relaxing

o Pages of hints, tips, strategies and insider knowledge to help you
ward off those hordes of unwanted extra-terrestrial creatures.

o No more registration reminder notices

6. Distribution
---------------
You are permitted to give copies of this unregistered version of
Invaders to other people providing that the following terms are met
and agreed to by anyone who receives a copy of Invaders.

1. All files associated with the game are given away in their
entirety. This includes the program file, data files and
documentation. Invaders is comprised of a package of files, so
please copy all of them when giving copies to other people. The
package of files comprising the unregistered version of Invaders
may be distributed as a single compressed (zip or other similar
type) file. It may be placed on bulletin boards or web sites.

2. The high score table file HISCORES.DAT is created automatically
by the program, so there is no need to distribute it.

3. No modifications may be made to any of the files. None of the
files associated with Invaders is in the public domain.

4. No charge is made for the software itself. Invaders may not be
used for financial gain. This covers, amongst other things,
selling, renting and leasing the software. The files associated
with the unregistered version Invaders are free of charge. You
are, however, permitted to charge people for any distribution costs
if you are operating a shareware library service or equivalent.
These costs might include disks, envelope, paper, administration
   and so on.

If you know or suspect that anyone has infringed these terms of
distribution, please contact Io Development. Please obtain the
permission of Io Development before distributing Invaders on
a magazine cover CD/disk, CD compilation or similar.
