Descent to Undermountain(tm) Version 1.3 DOS
============================================

Welcome to the Descent to Undermountain readme file. In this file,
you will hopefully find last minute instructions and tips on ensuring
that the game will run properly with your system.

Patch Installation
==================
To install the patch, put the DTU1-3.EXE in your
DESCENT TO UNDERMOUNTAIN directory. After that, just double click
on the DTU1-3.EXE or type DTU1-3.EXE from the command line
in your DESCENT TO UNDERMOUNTAIN directory.

Installing Descent to Undermountain
===================================

From Windows 95:
If you have Autorun enabled, the installer will automatically appear
when you insert your DESCENT TO UNDERMOUNTAIN CD.

Or, click on the START button, choose RUN, and browse for your CD-ROM
drive.  Then type SETUP.BAT

From DOS:
Go into your CD-ROM directory, run INSTALL.EXE,
and follow the on-screen directions. When you're
ready to start playing, run DTU.BAT.

Note: If you would like to reconfigure your sound card at a later
time, go into the directory you installed DESCENT TO UNDERMOUNTAIN to
and run SETUP.EXE

Uninstalling
============
To properly uninstall DESCENT TO UNDERMOUNTAIN from your system,
please run the UNINST.BAT file, then manually delete your DTU directory.

Trouble Shooting
================
Win95: Certain keyboards containing the Win95 key have been known
to crash the game when this key is pressed.

System Performance
==================
DESCENT TO UNDERMOUNTAIN is a DOS native product although we have
done everything to ensure that it is playable in Win95. We do
recommend playing the game in DOS for optimal performance.

Low Resolution: If you find that the game isn't running optimally
with your system, you may want to try running the game in Low Resolution.
To do this, use the "-lowres" switch when running the game.

        Example:  DTU -lowres

On-Line Manuals
===============
To access the on-line manual, enter the MANUAL directory and run the
DTU.PDF file. There is additional help on how to read the DTU.PDF

Hints and Tips
==============

PROGRESSION
-----------
There are a lot of choices for any one give situation. It is a good
idea to save often.

EXPLORATION
-----------
Pay close attention to your surroundings. If something looks out of place,
it probably is.  Be observant.

COMBAT TACTICS
--------------
Try hit and run tactics when in combat until your character has risen a
level or two. You will find your character able to stand toe-to-toe in
combat once he/she has more hit points.

Use projectiles to avoid close combat situations if necessary.

Try to fight in open areas when possible. It gives you a much better
advantage in combat rather than being surrounded in a corner.

Don't take on too many opponents at once. You will have better luck taking
on one or two at a time rather than the entire horde.

LADDERS
-------
You will not take falling damage if you are facing the ladder
during your descent.

MARKETPLACE
-----------
Take advantage of the marketplace. Visit it often to pick up potions
of healing, weapon and armor upgrades, and other goodies that may appear.

THE YAWNING PORTAL
------------------
Remember that the patrons in the Yawning Portal are more helpful as friends
rather than enemies. Talk to them often to get hints and maybe a quest or
two as you progress in the game.

CHAT BOX MESSAGES
-----------------
Pay close attention to messages that appear in the chat box. They offer
story material, hints, and general information.

MISSION SCROLLS
---------------
For information on your current mission, your character always
has it as the first item in his/her inventory. To use it, pick up
the scroll and drop it on the USE button in the INVENTORY screen.

HEALING POTIONS
---------------
Don't forget that you can put more than just weapons in your 10 hot key
spots. Equipping healing potions in these slots makes it easier to access
when you need it.

CRATES, BARRELS, and OTHER OBJECTS
----------------------------------
Don't forget to break open objects such as crates and barrels. You might
find useful items located within.

You will find that boots offer some protection against certain things in
the dungeon such as rats.

Video Card Issues
=================
A snippet from the 3D 2000 FAQ at www.diamondmm.com.....

Q
-
I run a DOS VESA game (MS Flight Simulator, Pandora's Directive, etc.)
and it works for a while, but then it scrambles after a few minutes.
If I restart the system its fine for a while and then it scrambles again.

A
-
This issue will occur with earlier versions of the Stealth 3D 2000
video BIOS. I.e. 1.01 and earlier or 2.01 and earlier. X.02 and
later BIOSes will correct this. You will need to contact Diamond's
Customer Service Dept. for a video BIOS upgrade. Please call
800-468-5846 or 408-325-7100 Mon-Fri, 6am-5pm (PST).

Keep in mind that there are two distinct BIOS series, 1.xx and 2.xx.
You MUST upgrade to a later version in the SAME series. I.e. 1.01 to
1.02, 2.01 to 2.02, etc.

Please know your current video BIOS before contacting Customer Service.
You can check your video BIOS version in the following ways:

1. View the blue banner that appears at the top of your screen when
you power up the system. It should identify the video card model and
video BIOS version. Note: On some systems this may scroll by too
fast or be over-ridden by the system BIOS.

2. Run the MSD.EXE DOS utility. This will be located in the \DOS
directory. If you have Win95, the utility can be found in the \other
directory of the Win95 CD-ROM. Once the program is run, go to the
"Video" section. Then view the line that reports the "Video BIOS Version".

3. Lastly, you can physically view the video card. Look for the BIOS
chip, it will be the one, rectangular, socketed chip. It will have
a Diamond sticker indicating the video card model and video BIOS version.
