1. INSTALLATION
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Urban Renewal Kit needs to be installed in the same subdirectory as
SimCity 2000 for DOS. The installation program will search for the file
SC2000.EXE and only install if it finds that file in the destination
directory you specify.

SCURK will utilize the sound options specified in your SimCity 2000
configuration file. If you get sounds properly in SimCity 2000, you
should get sounds correctly in SCURK. SCURK has no music.

During installation, SCURK will create a backup of your original
SC2000.DAT file, called SC2DAT.SAV if it cannot find one already. This
file is used to create the ORIGINAL.TIL file that you can use to copy
the original SimCity 2000 tiles into other sets. If SCURK cannot find
ORIGINAL.TIL, it will create it (the first time you run SCURK, it will
create this tile set.) If, for some reason your ORIGINAL.TIL file gets
corrupted, you can erase it and SCURK will rebuild it from the
SC2DAT.SAV file. If (worse yet) your SC2DAT.SAV file gets corrupted,
SCURK will not know and if it needs to create a new ORIGINAL.TIL file,
it will use the corrupt data. In this case, you will need to re-install
both SimCity 2000 AND the Urban Renewal Kit from your original floppy
disks.

The Urban Renewal Kit copies the following files to your hard disk,
you may delete these files (and ONLY these files) without damaging
SimCity 2000.

SCURK.COM MUNGE.EXE *.URK *.TIL *.PCX

The Urban Renewal Kit includes extended sound and music drivers that can
be used in SimCity 2000. These drivers include support for many sound
devices that were not available at the time SimCity 2000 for DOS was
released. The drivers are automatically copied to your hard disk during
installation, but you must run the INSTALL.EXE program to configure
SimCity 2000 to use the new drivers. They will show up in the CONFIGURE
SOUND and CONFIGURE MUSIC options of the installer.

2. TROUBLESHOOTING
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Urban Renewal Kit is very similar to SimCity 2000. If you are
experiencing any problems, first refer to the SimCity 2000 README.TXT
file, and if the suggestions there do not help, refer to this SCURK.TXT
file.

What to do if the Urban Renewal Kit crashes:
Some motherboards may have a problem with SimCity 2000 and the Urban
Renewal Kit's sound, which may cause either of these programs to crash.
If you are experiencing random crashes in SCURK, try disabling sound at
the main screen.

Make sure you have enough free memory and aren't loading any unnecessary
TSR's. TSR stands for Terminate and Stay Resident. It is a program that
is loaded when your computer boots and stays in memory all the time.
A Mouse driver is a TSR. There are also TSR's for sound cards, hard
disks, screen savers, joysticks, and other things. The easiest way to
find out if you have a memory problem or TSR conflict is to create a
boot disk. Included with SimCity 2000 and SCURK is a boot disk program
that will help you set up a floppy disk to bypass loading TSR's. SCURK
replaces the BOOTDISK program included with SimCity 2000 and will update
a boot disk that you may have already made for SimCity 2000. See the
SimCity 2000 README.TXT file for more information about making a boot
disk.

Make sure you have enough free hard disk space. The Urban Renewal Kit
uses free space on your hard disk to store information, you should have
at least 5 or so megabytes of free hard disk space available AFTER
INSTALLATION, especially if you plan to create new tile sets or cities.
If SCURK crashes, it may leave undeleted swap files. These swap files
always end with the extension .SWP and should be deleted if found.

Due to the way SCURK handles some drive cards, we recommend that you
reboot your machine after playing SCURK if you plan to run Microsoft
Windows to avoid possible problems.

3. VIDEO CARDS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
You may notice a slight flicker on your screen while running SCURK, this
is normal and will not cause any harm.

The print Urban Renewal Kit does not work properly with the S3 video
drivers used by SimCity 2000. When SCURK is installed, if it detects
these drivers in your SC2000.CFG file, it will change them to VESA
SuperVGA. Almost all video cards using the S3 chip set include VESA
drivers on the card, so the only way this will affect you is in a
possible loss of graphics speed.

4. MEMORY AND VIRTUAL MEMORY
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
SCURK has been built with the Rational Systems Virtual Memory Manager
enabled. This allows SCURK to run on machines with potentially very
little RAM memory ( 4 Meg and less ) despite the fact SCURK may have to
work with potentially large amounts of graphics in memory at once.

VM accomplishes this by "swapping" unneeded sections of RAM to disk
for any memory requests that come in when there is no longer any free
memory. These "swapped out" sections can later be "swapped in" as
needed. These operations will naturally be slower since disk accesses
are much slower than RAM memory accesses.

The extent of swapping and the size of the swap file ( the swap file is
created be default in the SimCity 2000 main directory and ends with
the extension ".SWP" ) is determined for the most part by how much
physical RAM resides on your machine, and also by your DOS memory
manager configuration. On machines with 4 Meg RAM or less, it's almost
certain that a swap file will be required although much depends on what
you are doing in SCURK. On machines with 8 Meg RAM or more, swapping
shouldn't occur, but it is possible that some EMS memory manager
configurations will not allow SCURK to access the full amount of RAM
memory on the machine. In this case swapping will occur and SCURK
performance will suffer.

In the worst case the size of the swap file should not exceed 4-5 Meg
on disk. Additionally, SCURK uses it's own temp files at times which
may get fairly large. To avoid potential problems, you should ensure
that you have about 4-6 Meg of free disk space available when running
SCURK.

If your machine has 8 Meg of RAM or more and SCURK seems to be running
very slowly with a lot of disk accessing, it is likely that your
EMS memory manager is not allowing SCURK to use your full compliment of
RAM. Look in your CONFIG.SYS file and see if your EMS manager line
has a number for amount of memory to devote to EMS. For instance,
if your line for the EMM386 memory manager looks like:

DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.SYS 2048 .....

Then SCURK will only be able to use 2 Meg of physical RAM despite
the fact that your machine may have 16 Meg of RAM! You'll get a
lot of swapping.

If all else fails, try making a boot disk or disable your EMS manager.
SCURK runs best without any other memory managers running.

The DOS4GW Virtual Memory Manager can be configured with the environment
variable: DOS4GVM. You really shouldn't need to make any adjustments
with this environment variable, but the format is as follows:

set DOS4GVM = [ option[#value] ] [ option[#value] ] ....

(a "#" is used with options that take values since the DOS command
shell doesn't accept "=")

Options are:
o MINMEM Min RAM managed by VM.
o MAXMEM Max RAM managed by VM.
o SWAPMIN Minimum initial swap file size.
o SWAPINC The size by which the swap file will grow.
o SWAPNAME Swap file name.
o DELETESWAP or NODELETESWAP. Swap file deletion after program exits.
o VIRTUALSIZE Size of virtual memory space.

Perhaps the most useful setting would be to put your swap file on a
different drive which has more free disk space. You could do this
by setting in your environment:

set DOS4GVM = SWAPNAME#D:\TMP\SCURK.SWP

This will put the swapfile on drive D:, in a directory named \TMP and the
swap file will be called SCURK.SWP.

5. RUNNING SCURK FROM AN OS/2 DOS SESSION
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
SCURK was actually mostly developed under OS/2 and runs quite nicely in
a full-screen DOS session. You should make sure that your DOS session
settings has DPMI ENABLED, HW_TIMER ON, RETRACE_EMULATION OFF and
give it between 8 - 16 Meg of DPMI memory. The DOS4GW Virtual Memory
manager does not operate in OS/2, but OS/2 handles all that for you
as long as you configure the DOS setting with plenty of DPMI memory.
Use the "NO_MEM_CHK" command line option when starting SCURK since
OS/2 doesn't appear to report the correct amount of memory available
when SCURK checks at startup.

6. GAME PLAY ISSUES/MISCELLANEOUS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
                   ** Disclaimer **
The SimCity 2000 Urban Renewal Kit does many many things that the
designers of SimCity 2000 did not anticipate. As a result, lots of
changes you can make to your graphics or saved cities in SCURK may have
unpredictable effects when actually loaded back into SimCity 2000. We
have taken every feasible precaution to protect against serious
complications, such as crashing SimCity 2000 or confusing the simulator,
but cannot guarantee that everything you do will work perfectly or even
at all.

The base of a tile in SimCity 2000 is reserved to be a certain size, if
the artwork that you are placing in this tile does not completely fill
the base of the tile, the exposed areas will appear brown when in
Place & Print or in SimCity 2000.

Due to the way SimCity 2000 "clips" the edges of moving graphics to make
sure they are erased properly as the graphic goes on, artwork for
Airplanes, Ships, Tornados and such may leave "trails" behind as the
objects move around your city. Trial and error is the best tool for
learning what will leave a mess and what won't.

Some of the color cycling colors in SimCity 2000 for DOS do not cycle
correctly. The colors that seem to work properly are the blue sets,
the Red/Black, Yellow/Black, Green/Black, and Brown sets.

SimCity 2000 handles airplane runways in a specific manner. All runways
in SimCity 2000 are 1x5 and do not cross. It is possible in SCURK to
place runways in different configurations. Some of these configurations
may confuse SimCity 2000 enough to cause it to crash, especially if
you create one of these "illegal" configurations in SCURK, import the
game into SimCity 2000, and destroy some of the runways. We recommend
sticking with the 1x5 configuration and not crossing runways unless
absolutely necessary.
Using the eyedropper on a clear portion of the background can turn any
paint tool into an erase tool.

In the Place & Print utility, since abandoned buildings and construction
zones have no default zone, here are the rules they follow when being
placed:
If you do not place the building on an existing zone, it will place with
the last zone type you had selected (High Density Residential, Low
Density Commercial, etc.).
If any part of the building is touching a zone, the entire building
will be placed as that zone.
If you place a building not touching a zone with no zone ever having
been chosen, it will default to High Density Residential.

If you are editing a tile and select Save or Save as, the edits you
were making to that tile will be saved (normally, tile edits are not
updated until you click on another tile).

When importing a PCX file, you may not cut an area of the PCX larger
than 80 percent of the screen. This should not be a factor, as no
single tile in SCURK is that large.

7. PRINTING
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cancelling print job may take a few moments after you tell it you wish
to stop.

When printing, the pages are ordered top to bottom, then left to right.
For instance a 3 by 3 page print would print in this order:
     _____________
     I 1 I 4 I 7 I
     I___I___I___I
     I 2 I 5 I 8 I
     I___I___I___I
     I 3 I 6 I 9 I
     I___I___I___I

When printing to a file, the resulting file can be up to 16 megabytes in
size. To print the file to a printer, type:

COPY /B <filename> LPT1

Instead of <filename>, you would type out the name of the file you
wish to print. LPT1 is the usual port a printer is plugged into. Your
system may have the printer on LPT2, consult with your manual if you're
not sure.

This is a list of printers that should support the drivers we include
in the Urban Renewal Kit. The printers that have been tested have a *
next to them.

8. SCURK COMMAND LINE OPTIONS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Command line options are given when starting SCURK from the DOS command
prompt. They can be used by typing them in after "SCURK" is typed on
the command line as follows:

SCURK <options ...>

Where the is at least 1 blank space between "SCURK" and the option(s)
(brackets around options are NOT typed in, they are just used to
signify that they are not required).

All options can be either upper- or lower-case.

Options are:

o NO_MEM_CHK: disable startup memory checking by SCURK. SCURK
will not start if there is not enough memory available on your
system. Some systems do not report the correct amount of memory
available and this option can be used to circumvent this
  problem.
o -Z: Disables internal "ZoomBlit" function. You can free up about
40K of memory usage with this flag. However, if you are using
the VESA SVGA driver, the refresh of the Edit Window will be
extremely slow and virtually unusable if this option is used.
Any other SVGA driver should work just fine with this option,
but will likely be just a little bit slower.
o -T: Title graphics option. This option will store some of the
graphics on the Main Screen on disk rather than in memory. This
frees up memory for other uses, but will result in slightly
slower redraws of the Main Screen.
o -TD: Title Detail option. Reduces the amount of graphics detail
on the Main Screen. Can be used to speed up redraws on slower
  machines.
o -S: Serialize Sound Option. If you are experiencing occasional
hangs, using this option may help on some machines. This seems
to be dependant on type of sound card and amount of memory.
This has a side-effect that there may be delays after clicking
buttons. Another method to avoid these hangs is to
disable sound entirely (from the SCURK Main Screen) and see if
  this clears up the problem.

Example Usage:

C:> SCURK no_mem_check -t
C:> SCURK -t -td -z
