ROME, ITALY
Legend says that when Rome caught fire in 64 AD, the brutal but artistically-inclined Emperor Nero sat and played his fiddle.
With most of Rome in ashes, Nero blamed the Christians for starting the blaze, possibly to divert suspicion from a more likely candidate -- himself.
Then Nero rebuilt Rome, including a fabulous palace for himself. But his murderous ways and the heavy taxation he levied to pay for his constructions led to revolt.
Eventually, with Spain and his own guard in rebellion, the Senate declared Nero a public enemy. With the coming of horsemen to arrest him, Nero committed suicide, reportedly saying, "What an artist the world is losing in me!"
