Though Muslims are prohibited from showing animal or human forms in their artwork, their faith has no prohibition against beautiful writing.
So, with other artistic avenues closed to faithful Muslims, many Muslim artists have focused their energies on beautiful calligraphy, particularly to highlight passages from the Islamic holy book, the Koran.
The Koran is accepted as the word of God by Muslims. The content of the Koran was given by Islam's founder, Muhammed, but it was first fully written down by Caliph Uthman in about 681 AD, approximately 48 years after Muhammed's death.
