			JPEG Workshop Release Notes
			===========================

This document contains information which does not appear in the
manual, and latest release updates. If there are any questions
please contact OPTIBASE directly, not Addstor.

1. Common Dialog Box Support
============================
Current release supports the new Windows 3.1 common dialog boxes.
If you are a Windows 3.0 user, you should have directed "Install"
to copy COMMDLG.DLL to your Windows directory. If you have
problems loading the software, please check that the file was
copied properly. An "Info" button was added to the "Open" dialog
box, to obtain image info directly from disk.

2. Optibase JPEG OptiTools
==========================
The program was built around the Optibase JPEG OptiTools. This
package enables you to integrate JPEG compression into any
existing application, running under DOS or Windows.
Please contact Optibase for more details.

3. 8 Bit/pixel Color Compression
================================
This new feature enables compression of pseudo-color images from
screen.  Note:
That during compression, the image is converted from 8 bit/pixel
to 24 bit/pixel. Therefore, the effective compression ratio should
be divided by 3, to obtain the real compression ratio.
It is advised to keep the Y:U:V ratio at 1:1:1 for 8 bit color
compression, since especially for dithered images, the additional
subsampling in the chrominance can cause severe color degredation.
Color compression is offered also for 8 bit/pixel PCX files. Other
pseudo-color images (8 bit/pixel TGA, TIF, BMP) are not compressed
as color in the current version.

4. Automatic Preview
====================
This new feature helps to determine quickly which Q factor zone
should be used for compression. The automatic preview generates
four different windows,
each with a different Q factor (10, 30, 50, 70). This clerly
demonstrates how the image would look compressed, under 'Perfect',
'Excellent', 'Good' and 'Fair' compression qualities.

5. More PCX support
====================
Revisions 2.11 and up have now support for 24 bit PCX files, both
in compress, load and save modes.

6. The Optibase JPEG Server
===========================
The Optibase JPEG DDE server is included in the Workshop package.
When loaded, the server will appear iconic at the bottom-left
section of the screen. To obtain more information on the DDE
server, double-click on the server icon, and choose the 'Help'
menu. The server is a very powerful tool for database
applications, and Object Oriented Program environments which
support DDE (e.g. MS Visual Basic (r)).
Please contact Optibase for more details.

7. Expfile
==========
Expfile is included in the Workshop package. It is a DOS based,
file to file decompression utility. For more details on how to
use Expfile, type Expfile at the DOS prompt.

8. Compressing
==============
You should select the FILE, COMPRESS menu for the highest quality
and compression ratio when using a 256 color card. When in 16 bit
or higher mode the SAVE AS works just as well as COMPRESS.

9. Supported File Format's
==========================
Select OPEN, and highlight an image file Workshop can compress.
The window will tell how the image will be compressed.

10. Preview
===========
If you Preview a grayscale image and notice the color palette on
the image file drops in quality, this is expected. You can only
display one Palette at a time and grayscale shows that more then
a color image would, so don't worry this is normal.
