                     QUEST HELP

                      ZIG-ZAG
                WORD GAME OF ALL TIME

             The Legend Behind The Game

Long before recorded time began in this paradise, the Hawaiian
islands lay undiscovered by man. Then came a group of
Polynesians in a fleet of outriggers, led by their mythical
leader Hawaii Loa .

To insure that future kings would rule judiciously, legend
says Hawaii Loa set up a great test of knowledge and
skill _ a grand contest requiring literacy, foresight, intuition,
and endurance. Only a very wise man indeed could earn the
right to become the King and direct the islands to their destiny.

When the "haoles" (white men) came, the grand game was lost
to history. Legend says it had three quest phases _ a trek
across sacred grounds, a dangerous outrigger journey spanning
the Hawaiian isles, and a treacherous dive through a shark-filled
grotto to a hidden underwater cave. Black pearls were placed
along each course for the participants to increase their score.

But the central feature of the contest was the great deduction word
game used to test the knowledge and sagacity of the competitors.
Now Prince Joli Kansil, a Hawaiian resident, has recreated this
mythical game, produced now in English for a modern audience,
dubbed ZIG-ZAG due to its zigzaggy appearance and mind-bending
strategy. Experience the ancient challenge of ZIG-ZAG for yourself!

                    How To Play a Quest

Objective: The objective of each Quest journey is to move Zaggy
from the starting point on the grid in the upper left corner to the
finishing point in the lower right corner, collecting as many points
as possible along the way. Each move will consist of solving a
Zig-Zag game with a word or number length corresponding to
the exact number of squares you wish to move. Therefore, only
moves of 4 to 7 squares are possible.

To begin play the player double-clicks on the square desired as the
destination for the move. A window will appear asking the player
to confirm the move attempt and to choose the difficulty level of the
Zig-Zag game to be played. The player then selects the desired level
from the pop-up menu and clicks the "OK?" button or may click the
"Cancel" button to change the strategy. The player must be cautious
with each selection to avoid trapping Zaggy, leaving him stranded
without another possible move.

To win a Quest, the player must direct Zaggy to a final landing on
any of the four outlined squares surrounding the bottom right
corner of the grid. Entry into any of the Quest journey destination
squares must result from an exact move of 4, 5, 6 or 7 squares, the
same as regular moves throughout the grid. Careful selection of
routes will enhance the players chances of establishing a new record
high score!

Movement: Movement is achieved by double-clicking with the
mouse in the square you wish to move to followed by a solution
of the selected Zig-Zag game secretword or number.

Restrictions: In all the Quests (except SunQuest) there are
obstacles to your movement (see information below on specific
quests). Zaggy may not land on, move through, or cross over
any of the obstacles on his journey. If the player does not
correctly deduce the secretword or number, the computer
may automatically enter additional obstacles in those squares
along the chosen route depending upon which Quest you are
playing.

Pearls: As a bonus there are Black Pearls placed randomly
on the Quest screen. These Black Pearls act as Multipliers
and each Zig-Zag game score will be multiplied by the total
of all Black Pearls in the player's current move. For example,
if a move takes Zaggy over a Black Pearl with a value of 3
and a Black Pearl with a value of 4, the regular Zig-Zag game
score would be multiplied by 7.

Difficulty Bonus: There is also a bonus for the level of difficulty
the player chooses to play. The level played is rated 1 through
9 to correspond with the player's choice of level difficulty and
acts as another Multiplier in the quest for new record high scores.
Corresponding Multipliers for the Number Please! game are .5
for Easy and 5 for Hard.

NOTE: Pearl Multipliers and Difficulty Multipliers will only be
credited if the player actually solves the Zig-Zag secretword or
number. If the player fails to deduce the secretword or number,
computer scoring still recognizes whatever points were actually
scored in the Zig-Zag game.

ZIG-ZAG QUESTS:

Besides playing individual ZIG-ZAG games going for high
scores at various levels of difficulty, the player can also play
one of six strategical Quests _ each of which is a series of
ZIG-ZAG games involving an extra level of tactics and strategy.
The words the player solves in ZIG-ZAG play are spelled-out
across an obstacle-filled playing grid as the player chooses the
path to sucessfully travel from one corner to the other and pick
up bonus points along the way, going for the highest possible
total score.

THERE ARE SIX QUESTS:

The SunQuest (Holoholo ia napo'o 'ana o ka la) _ a modern
high-scoring quest unfettered by obstacles. The player can
choose the path freely across the peaceful Hawaiian Sunset
scene. There are extra numbers of bonus pearls that appear
randomly on screen and tempt the player to risk a longer path.
The challenge here is to run up a mega-high total score.

Obstacles: None.

Penalties: If a word is missed, the path you had chosen will be
blocked off and you will have to choose a new path on your next move.

Scoring: If the word is solved correctly your score will be the
TOTAL of all the multipliers crossed over (multiplied by the
word difficulty factor) (multiplied by your score from your just
completed game). If you MISS the word you will still receive
the same score but you will not advance and your path will be
blocked.

Black Pearls: 4 - 4x Multpliers, 6 - 3x Multipliers and
8 - 2x Multipliers.

Starting Point: Zig.
Ending Point: Zag.

                          plus...
Hawaii Loa's three quests of wisdom:

The Sacred Grounds Quest (Wahi wa'a ka huli ana)_ Leave
the safety of your village to go on a marathon-like trek across s

via bridges. Pick up the Black Pearls in your path for bonus
points.

Obstacles: Trees, mountains and rivers (bridges are crossable).

Penalties: None, letters are placed down as if you solved the word
but any multipliers you may cross over are not counted.

Scoring: If the word is solved correctly, your score will be the
TOTAL of all the multipliers crossed over (multiplied by the word
difficulty factor) (multiplied by your score from your just completed
game). If you MISS the word you will receive only the raw score
obtained on the word with no multipliers used.

Black Pearls: 2 - 4x Multpliers, 3 - 3x Multipliers and
4 - 2x Multipliers.

multipliers - or (if this would be less than zero) 2) half your
current quest total.
