Installing and running SandWarriors
=====================================================================
SETTING UP SOUND
The installation program offers you the choice of either manually
setting up your soundcard or using the autodetect function.

AUTODETECT
When using autodetect the installation program will automatically
detect the type and settings of your sound card. If you experience
any problems when using autodetect, such as the machine locking up,
reboot your machine and set the sound card manually.

MANUAL SETUP
When setting up your sound card manually you will be asked to select
your soundcard from a list of types, then enter the PORT, IRQ and DMA
setting. You can either try the suggested default settings or
customise to suit your own machine setting. Refer to Windows(r)95
"Hardware" profiles to find the hardware profiles of your soundcard,
or the technical help that came with the card.

IN GAME MUSIC
Sandwarriors features 3 types of in-game music. These are FM, MIDI,
and Redbook CD audio. The most basic type of music is the FM type,
the quality of music will improve over the two alternatives though
you may need to have extra hardware to access the MIDI and REDBOOK.

GENERAL MIDI
In order to use MIDI music your soundcard must be midi compatible.
(refer to soundcard technical spec`s) NOTE: the autodetect feature
cannot detect whether your card can support MIDI music, you must
setup for MIDI manually. To do this, when setting up your soundcard
in the install utility once you have set "Sound effects" you will be
prompted "Use these settings for Music?". If you select "No" you
will be prompted to select from a list of soundcards. Notice the
"Compact Disk Audio" option at the top of the list, select this if
you want to listen to the Redbook Cd Audio music in game.
From the list of soundcards for MIDI music select your card or try
the "General Midi" option, entering your card settings
(PORT,IRQ,DMA).

After selecting your music card you will be offered the option to
test your settings. If you select "yes" you should hear a scale of
notes playing from your system. If you don't hear anything your
soundcard has not configured correctly, adjust settings when
prompted to try again.

COMPACT DISK AUDIO (Redbook)
The best quality music in Sandwarriors comes directly from the Cd,
just like in standard music CD`s. In order to access CD music you
must select the option as detailed above. When testing the sound
setup if no music is heard your computer system may not have the
required hardware link from your CD player to your soundcard. This
link cable joining CD drive to soundcard comes with most modern CD
players and is supported on most modern audio cards
(refer to CD/Soundcard technical info).

If you do not have your CD and Soundcard linked, CD music will
not come through your computer speakers, however you may still be
able to run the CD music by plugging headphones into the socket
on the front of the CD drive.

GENERAL SOUND TIPS
The sound levels of both music and sound effects in SandWarriors can
be modified via the menu option screens in game. If you are having
difficulty adjusting sound levels you may want to try adjusting the
Master volume control in Windows(r)95.(The volume control is found
on your Win95 toolbar). Ensure the Windows(r)95 settings are level
before trying to run SandWarriors or the sound levels in game
may be affected.

GAME ANIMATIONS
Sandwarriors features a number of fullscreen video sequences which
play throughout the game. The quality of the video (GDV) is
dependant on two things.

a)The speed of your CD drive e.g. 2x 4x 6x
b)The capabilities of your video card

If your graphics card cannot support 16bit (high colour mode) you
will only be able to watch the animations in 256 colour mode.
If you have a 2x speed CD drive you will only be able to watch the
256 colour animations.
For best quality and performance you will need at least a 4x CD
and a video card that supports 16bit colour mode
(refer to Videocard technical sheet for info)

Problems with Animations
If you are experiencing problems with video playback, such as
pausing and jerkiness this may be because your CD is contaminated
with grease (deposited through handling).Clean the SandWarriors
Disk, replace in drive and try again.

The problem may also be caused if your CD speed is not
fast enough. To help this situation edit the Config.ini file
in the SW installed directory, you will see a line e.g.

CDTransferRate=462

the above example (462) is a typical example of a 4x CD
Try reducing the value set here (do not set to lower than 200)

IN GAME VIDEO RESOLUTIONS
The Base requirements to run SandWarriors in the different video
modes are listed below.

320x200(DOS) - Requires 8 meg minimum (only in DOS mode with 8 meg).
320x200(Win95)- Requires 16meg minimum.

640x480 - Requires 16meg (access through DOS mode )
640x480+ - Requires 16meg (access through DOS mode )
800x600 - Requires 16meg (access through DOS mode )

USING HIGHER RESOLUTIONS IN WINDOWS(r)95.
In order to access resolutions higher then 320x200 you must have
16meg minimum. With 16meg you will be able to run at 320x200
in Windows(r)95, however the other higher res modes will only work
from the DOS mode icon. In order to run in higher resolutions from
Win95 you must have more memory (20mb+)

If a video mode is unselectable in game (greyed out) this is
because your system does not have enough memory to offer
the resolution.

RUNNING SANDWARRIORS IN DOS MODE
It is advisable to run Sandwarriors from its own DOS mode icon
rather than to shut down Windows(r)95 manually and run SW from DOS.
This is to ensure the proper close down of windows and that
the correct drivers for SandWarriors are loaded.

TROUBLE WITH VIDEO MODES
If you Experience any problems running SandWarriors in a video mode,
please be sure you are using the correct video driver for your Card.
(refer Video Card manuals for driver information).

Owners of some Matrox Millenium Cards may experience difficulty
running SandWarriors in 800x600 mode again, ensure you are using
the latest version of the Millenium video drivers. If you cannot
locate the correct driver for your card try running with the UNIVBE
VESA drivers available from a range of sources. Cirrus Logic (5436),
may also need the UNIVBE driver if experiencing corrupted graphics.
(internet and included with some demo games).

GENERAL ADVICE
Always run SandWarriors from a clean system startup. Do not run
other programs (such as games and applications) before running
SandWarriors. If SandWarriors exits for an unknown reason, always
reset the machine before trying again.

REDBOOK MUSIC PROBLEMS
If you experience any problems with Redbook Cd Audio music
when running SandWarriors in Windows(r)95 try running in DOS mode.

WINDOWS95 Keys
If using Sandwarriors from within Windows(r)95 you may inadvertently
press the "start" Key (Windows(r)95 keyboards only)
this will cause SandWarriors to freeze whilst the Windows system
pops up. Don't panic!
Sandwarriors can be restored by clicking on its Button now residing
on the Windows(r)95 Toolbar.
Note: SandWarriors can only be restored if you were flying in-game
when you jumped out to windows. If you were in the menu system,
Windows(r)95 may not be able to restore SandWarriors.

RUNNING SANDWARIORS ON AN 8 MEG MACHINE
SandWarriors will run in DOS mode on an 8 meg machine.
To avoid any memory problems ensure you are not running
SMARTDRIVE. To remove smartdrive, if it is running, you must
disable the line by placing REM in front of it. If you wish to
enable smartdrive the REM statement must be deleted.

MANUAL OMMISIONS/CHANGES
The scoring System in Sandwarriors is one which allows you to
continue playing the game when you have died (afterall the Egyptians
did believe in life after death!) This feature is not without a price.
When you "continue" after dying in game you score up to the point of
death is forfeited and reset to 0. this is to ensure a fairer
representation of player ability on the high score table. Take care
Iren-Har! (or periodically save your game!)...

DEATH
When your ship explodes and is scattered across the Sand dunes all is
not lost. With the option to resume only a few keypresses away you
might want to take time to look around you (through the blood red
camera view) at the battle where you lost your life. This may help
you learn where you made your mistakes!.

GOOD LUCK!!
