I. THE STORY

This feels like something out of a bad dream! You awake to find yourself
hanging by your flight straps and looking at black earth instead of stars
through the shattered viewplates in your cockpit. As you hang there, you
start to remember how you got here. The loss of the communication with the
monitoring station on the moon, the decision to send someone back to make
sure earth's curse hadn't spread off planet. The reports from the station had
become increasingly grim. The mutants created after the last of earth's wars
had begun to rebuild the lethal technologies thought destroyed. The reports
of the typical roving bands had been replaced by what was sounding like
organized effort. Someone or something named Shrak was starting a little
empire down there. With the powerful weapons and screwed up DNA that
these monsters had, containing them on earth was essential to mankind's
survival.

You were the lucky guy sent back to look things over but this up close and
personal crap wasn't supposed to happen! You give up trying to figure out
what happened, it's all just a blur of emergency lights and screaming alarms
with mother earth getting larger and larger in front of you. Your watch tells
you that you have been out of it for quite a while. If they'd seen your ship
come down you would've been taken before your `nap' was over.

A quick check of the ship's systems show that just about the only thing still
working is the display telling you she'll never fly again. You estimate your
ships position against the maps and decide that you aren't too far away from
what passes for civilization here and the quicker you get started the sooner
you can get the hell off this rock and back to your world.

Your only chance is to fire up one of the teleporters here on the planet. If
you can find what's left of one and some parts you are certain you can get it
running. The trick's gonna be not getting dead while you work on it.

As you leave the ship behind you wonder if you really want to find out what's
happening here.

II. INSTALLING SHRAK

A. Installation

In order to experience Shrak you must have the full registered version of the
id Software(r) game Quake(r). Shrak has been designed as an addition to
Quake(r) and will not function without it.

After inserting the CD-ROM containing Shrak log onto your CD-ROM drive
(usually drive D: ) and type INSTALL.
You will need to know where your registered copy of Quake(r) has been
placed. The default will be C:\QUAKE. After the installation completes you
may run the file SHRAK.BAT to start Quake(r) with the Shrak experience.

(For all of you modem players, NETSHRAK.BAT will do the job).

B. Shrakman.txt

This is the file you are now reading.

C. id Software's MANUAL.TXT

If you are having problems getting Shrak to function you must first ensure
that Quake(r) will run correctly on your computer system. The file
manual.txt included with your copy of Quake(r) contains specific instructions
on how to get the most out of your PC.

III. THE BASICS OF PLAY

A. Goal of the Game

Shrak has two basic goals. First, stay alive. Second, gather the
computer chips you need to repair the teleporter and return with the
information necessary to keep your home from being destroyed.

B. Skill

The start area has three short hallways. The one you go down selects
the Skill you wish to play at.
Easy - Don't want to fall down and go boom.
Medium - Weekend Warrior.
Hard - I'm gonna kick EVERYBODY's ASS!

C. Getting About

Shrak uses the default control systems from Quake(r). The good point
being that you won't have to learn some new control scheme. The bad news
is you have to redo any customizing. Don't worry, any settings you change to
play Shrak won't effect Quake(r).

D. Multiplayer Action

There are several deathmatch only levels in Shrak, they are:

	Shred Shrine (map shrine)
	The Rig (map therig)
	Gothic Garden (map garden)
	Beckoning	(map beakon)
	Quantum Base	(map mdwbase)

The Shrak levels are:

Death Glow	(map dglow)	The Shipyard	(map city)
Toxic Waste	(map under)	Nite Fall	(map nitefall)
Remnants	(map rubble)	Ending (map end1)
Wreck Age	(map age)	Transport Hub	(map hub)
Catharsis	(map cath)	Under Dwellings	(map caverns)
Den of Denial	(map dod)	The Secret Level (you find it!)

While all Shrak levels are capable of playing deathmatch, some are better laid out
than others. It is recommended that you look 'em over before you invite the whole
Clan to play.

If you are planning to use Shrak levels for multiplayer action you will use the same
command set that you use for Quake(r). The file NETSHRAK.BAT will start Shrak with
TCP/IP drivers included with Quake(r). For any other network protocol you will need
your own batch file. After your server is started simply load the map you need to use
with the MAP command from the console and rock -n- roll!

For information on the MAP command and multiplayer action in general please refer to the
file TECHINFO.TXT included with your registered Quake(r) game.

B. The Main Menu

Is the same as Quake(r) - Go an' read their manual.

V. CAPTURE THE FLAG

Capture the Flag is a deathmatch mode where teamwork is stressed.
Points are scored only for retrieving your team's flag from the enemy base
and returning it to your base.

BugWar is an exciting option for Capture the Flag that allows one team
to play as spiders and the other team to play as scorpions.

There are three special maps included in this package for Capture the
Flag: CTF1.BSP, CTF2.BSP, and CTF3.BSP. These maps cannot be used for
single player or regular deathmatch mode.

A. Starting the Game

To play a Capture the Flag game in Humans vs. Humans mode, follow
these directions:

1) From the command line, change to the directory where Quake is
installed.

             eg. cd \quake

2) Type "netshrak +teamplay 0 +map ctf<n>", but do not type the double
quotes. Hit the Enter key.

You can replace "ctf<n>" with the name of another Capture the Flag
map. ie. ctf1, ctf2, or ctf3.

To play a Capture the Flag game in BugWar mode, follow these
directions:

1) From the command line, change to the directory where Quake is
installed.

            eg. cd \quake

2) Type "netshrak +teamplay 255 +map ctf<n>", but do not type the
double quotes. Hit the Enter key.

You can replace "ctf<n>" with the name of another Capture the Flag
map. ie. ctf1, ctf2, or ctf3.

B. Playing the Game

1) Observer mode

You will start the game in an observer mode that allows you to move around
the map and watch the action until you decide to join a team.

Observers cannot interfere with game play. This includes not being
visible to other players, not being able to harm other players, and not
being able to pick up objects.

2) Joining a team

When you are ready to start playing, you must join a team by using one
of the following commands. The command must be typed from the Quake
console (use the tilde '~' key to open and close the Quake Console).
Remember to hit the Enter key after you've typed the command and before
you close the Quake console :

join_red : Join or create the red team
join_blue : Join or create the blue team

In addition, if you are playing in BugWar mode, you can use the following
commands :

join_scorpions : Join the scorpions' team
join_spiders : Join the spiders' team

3) Picking up the flag

One member of your team must go to the enemy base or the central flags
area (depending on the map) and grab your team flag. To grab the flag,
just walk over it. The flag disappears from this location and the
appearance of the player who grabbed the flag (We'll call him/her
a flag carrier from now on) changes. No one can pick up the flag of the
opposing team.

In Humans vs. Humans mode, flag carriers will have their weapons slung
and appear to be carrying a flag. In BugWar mode, the flag carriers will turn
purple.

4) Scoring

The flag carrier scores one point for his or her team by returning the flag to
the team base. Killing other players does not score any points in CTF mode.
When the flag has been returned to the base, it is respawned in its original
location.

Only one player per team shows the score so team scores can be displayed on
the status bar. All other players on the team shows -99.

5) Dying

If a flag carrier is killed, he or she loses the flag and is no longer a flag
carrier. The flag will be returned to its original location.

VI. YOUR ENVIRONMENT

A. Firepower

Laser Pistol

Light `em up like a Christmas Tree! The default party favor.

Double-barreled Shotgun

No way we'd lock up the ol' street howitzer! Step right up two shells
no waiting.

Liquid Cooled Uzi

Make friends and influence people with this quick-firing beauty. Goes
through ammo like it's free so watch it!

Converter

Research hasn't quite perfected it yet - sends a pulse that will upset
the neurotransmitters in the brain. Hit some of these bad guys and
they'll tear through everything except you - others just get a hangover.

Inflator Dartgun

This little beauty fires a super-compressed gas capsule. When it hits
the bloodstream the gas is released - stand back this one gets messy!
Be careful, some of the big ones may need more than one shot. Plus
this one hasn't been tested on anything but humanoids.

Rocket Launcher

Just the way to send "greetings" to friends far away!

HFB Launcher

Use it on a group of baddies - good for what ails you! An' no we won't
tell what HFB stands for.

B. Ammo

Shells

For the double-barreled shotguns. A small box holds 20.

9mm Semi-Jacketed Hollow Point

Fit's the Uzi just perfectly The small box gets you 25

SS-89p Anti-Personnel Rocket

Reach out and torch someone!

Power Cells

You run out of these and you can kiss your laser, converter and
probably your ass goodbye.

C. Power-ups

All power-ups except armor burn out after a while, so smoke 'em while you
got 'em.

Armor

Standard armor types commercial grade (yellow) and military grade
(red) will be available to you

Utility Vest

Here's a little tool kit that will help you out of a jam. It'll cycle
through its contents. Rare so don't go hog wild!
1a:	Claw hook - see the world in a whole new way
1b:	Plastique - One block of this will make the world a better
		place.
1c:	Flares - Dark corner? No problem!

Megahealth

Gives you 100 additional hit points. After a few seconds, all hit points
over 100 start slowing draining away, because it's too much for the
human frame to hold. Still, it's nice while it lasts.

Oxygen Tank

Just the thing for those under slime explorations.

Cross of Protection

Renders you invulnerable.

Quantum Damage

Magnum upgrade! You now deliver four times the pain!

D. Bad Guys

Earth is under new management these days. Your nightmares have never
chased you around - until now.

Zed It sickens you to think that these things crawled out of the same
gene pool you did. Their end needed more chlorine!

Ohmi Even worse than the Zed, these are human defectors who think
the will have better luck on the mutant's side.

Viscor Possibly the worst of the mutants. Viscor is out of a freakshow's
nightmare - two minds with one bad attitude.

RucasRiot	Not quite mutated, but not quite human - these guys have
something to prove to both sides.

FireCrawler	Don't let these slugs fool you, they ain't after your vegetable
		garden!

LightSear	Ever wonder what a scorpion looks like to a mouse? Don't stand
		still too long!

Gorok Makes a tarantula look like a teddy-bear. The only thing worse
than these coming after you is what happens when they catch
		you!

Shrak He's rumored to be the leader behind this whole mess. Nobody
human has ever seen him and lived to tell about it. You gonna
		be first?

VII. TROUBLESHOOTING

If you are going to be running Shrak in single player mode it is best to boot
clean . You eliminate unwanted utilities or applications from taking up
valuable memory, without having to alter your regular AUTOEXEC.BAT and
CONFIG.SYS. Booting clean can be done in one of two ways. If you have MS-
DOS version 6.xx, booting clean is as simple a pressing the shift key when
you see the words "Starting MS-DOS". If you have MS-DOS ver 5.xx you will
need to make a system disk.

To make a boot disk, type the following from the MS-DOS command prompt:

	FORMAT A: /S

1. Make sure that this is a disk you wish to erase.
2. This disk absolutely HAS to be formatted in the A: drive.

To use the system disk, place the disk in the A: drive and reset the
computer.

NOTE: If your sound card requires a driver to be loaded, or you will be
using a mouse, or you will be using Quake's CD audio feature, the system
disk will need to have a CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT that load the
appropriate drivers.

Creating a Shrak Shortcut

As an alternative to making a Boot Disk, Windows 95 users can create a
Shrak Shortcut. By double clicking on this shortcut, Windows 95 will reboot
in MS-DOS mode and install only the desired drivers, giving you the same
results as using a boot disk. To create a Shrak Shortcut, do the following:

1. Using Explorer, right click and drag the file SHRAK.BAT, from the Quake
directory, to your desktop. From the menu that pops up select "Create
Shortcut(s) Here" and Windows 95 will make an MS-DOS Icon titled
    "Shortcut to shrak.bat".
2. Right click on the new icon, and from the menu that pops up, choose
"Properties". Then choose the "Program" tab at the top.
3. Now click on the "Advanced..." button near the bottom. The "Advanced
    Program Settings" window should appear.
4. Select the "MS-DOS mode" check box and the "Specify a new MS-DOS
    configuration" option button.
5. Now simply fill in the "CONFIG.SYS for MS-DOS mode:" and
"AUTOEXEC.BAT for MS-DOS mode:" boxes with the sound, CD-ROM and
mouse settings required for your system.
6. Click on "OK" when you are finished. If you wish, you can change your
Shrak Shortcut Icon to something a little more exciting by clicking on
    "Change Icon...".
7. To finish, click on "OK" again.
8. You can rename your Shrak Shortcut by right clicking on the shortcut
icon, choosing "Rename" and typing in the new name.

Digital Audio Problems

When running Shrak under Windows 95 some users have reported a conflict between
the AutoPlay feature included with 95 and the one in the Quake(tm) engine. The
result will be the soundtrack playing in the wrong order. Disable the Auto-
notify feature and restart your system to correct this problem.

To Disable Auto Insert:

1. Right click the My Computer Icon on your desktop.
2. Select Properties then the Device Manager Tab
3. Select the CDROM section and the drive in your machine
4. Click Properties and the Settings Tab
5. REMOVE the check mark from the Auto insert notification and select OK
6. Restart your computer when asked.
