In 1806 Serbia and Montenegro in the Balkans and large areas of Anatolia are in revolt against the Ottoman empire. As a consequence of Serbian successes Sultan Selim III declares a Holy War against them and gathers large forces.
Selim III then allies with Napoleon which angers the Turks former allies, the British and Russians. Since the defeat of Austria and Russia by Napoleon in 1805, French attentions have turned to the conquest of Prussia.
Britain remains isolated across the English channel whilst Russia, still nervous of French success against Austria, prepares for war against the Ottoman Empire in support of the Serbs.
