By 1798, after four years of continuous warfare against the European monarchies, Republican France has gained control of Belgium, Holland and Northern Italy. The Royalist counter revolt in La Vendee has been crushed and the great coalition of European powers against France has been broken.
With the Ottoman empire weakened by revolts in the Balkans, the French under General Bonaparte have conquered Egypt to threaten English trade routes and influence in the east.
As a result a new coalition of anti-French powers is born consisting of Great Britain, Russia, the Ottoman Empire, The Kingdom of Naples, Sardinia, Portugal and Sweden.
Facing this new threat General Bonaparte is recalled to France.
