The recent and sudden boost in online awareness is pushing to the limit the technical requirements for online content and access providers. Vircom introduced DMA to break the barriers in the number of online services and applications (i.e. content) that could be offered using the rich Worldgroup/MajorBBS environments. (Information on DMA is available at www.vircom.com.) Vircom is now proposing the RADIUS server, in conjunction with the terminal server technology, as a growth model to increase the maximum number of access lines, phone or otherwise, well beyond the current possibilities. What are terminal servers? Terminal Servers XE "Terminal Servers" are multi-serial-port hardware devices that hookup to a network, instead of directly into a PC. Since they have their own PPP/SLIP/CSLIP server, they offer additional functionality and flexibility over other serial hardware. Many of them also implement the RADIUS protocol. It is these terminal servers that must be used with Vircoms RADIUS server for Worldgroup/MajorBBS. (Note: There are variations in the implementation of the RADIUS standard by different brand of terminal servers. You can contact Vircom for a list of terminal servers that have been tested.) What is the Worldgroup environment? Worldgroup was designed to bridge the gap between the World Wide Web, online systems and workgroups. Worldgroup v2.0 includes a freely distributable Netscape plug-in that enables a user to launch a suite of off-the-shelf multimedia client/server applications directly from a company's Web site. Its predecessor is MajorBBS. More information on Worldgroup is available at www.gcomm.com. What is really RADIUS? The RADIUS acronym stands for Remote Authentication Dial In User Service. When a terminal server receives a PPP/SLIP/CSLIP connection on one of its serial port, it sends the userid and password information, over a TCP/IP network, to Vircoms RADIUS server for Worldgroup/MajorBBS. The users security and accounting information are then verified against the user database and a confirmation is sent back to the terminal server, with the maximum duration of the call. There is no further communication to the Worldgroup/MajorBBS system for this users connection until the connection is closed. This process is radically different from handling the PPP/SLIP/CSLIP connection directly through one of the serial ports of the Worldgroup/MajorBBS system. Highlights of RADIUS benefits Performance: Using terminal servers, the throughput of the TCP/IP traffic of users connections will definitely increase. A beta-tester has evaluated the increase at 30%! Accessibility: Since shutdowns and crashes of the Worldgroup/MajorBBS dont affect RADIUS connections in progress, the online time of the business operations is increased. No ceiling of 255 lines: The RADIUS server has minimal CPU & disk impact, so a single Worldgroup system could be the accounting server for a pool of 1,000+ lines. Redundancy: By having phone lines being served by multiple terminal servers, the risks related to a hardware failure on all lines is reduced, as opposed to running them all in a single Worldgroup/MajorBBS system. No need for 6-packs: As PPP/SLIP/CSLIP users are not actually logging in and going through the Worldgroup/MajorBBS system, Worldgroup user licenses dont have to be purchased. Availability and Pricing The current RADIUS server for Worldgroup and MajorBBS supports MajorBBS v6.25, and Worldgroup v1.x and v2.0. It also requires the system to be running Vircoms MajorTCP/IP. (Information on MajorTCP/IP can be found at www.vircom.com.) Clients may order the software and upgrades from any of our fine distributors below (or other unlisted resellers). The base RADIUS server for WG/MBBS is priced at $500 USD, for a 32-ports license. Additional 32-ports upgrades can be purchased at $200 USD each.
