Oltima 2000: The Quest for the Holy Grail The land surrounding Cardonia has become evil, and the once prized possesion of the city, The Holy Grail, has been stolen. For years the people of Cardonia have been awaiting the person that might bring happiness to their land. Legend has it that 7 dragons stole the Grail from the town during the War of the Lands. People lost all hope, and their towns and cities became barren. The dragons supposedly hid the Grail, and surrounded it by a force field that can only be broken through with the 7 Colored Rings. Your job is to locate these 7 dragons, slay them, and collect the 7 rings to unlock the force field around the Grail. Many have tried, none have succeded. But the people still hope that someone might be able to restore the love and peace that they once had. About Oltima 2000 ==================== Oltima 2000 is a FULL-ANSI dungeons and dragons game. There are over 20 worlds and 1000 NPC's (Non-Player Characters, or players controled by the computer). You are allowed to play with up to 5 characters, but they are not allowed to travel together. Each character has its own adventure. Oltima is fully menu driven, and all commands are single keystroke for ease of use. Oltima was developed over a 6 month period. Creating a Character ==================== If you do not have any characters on file, and you select P from the main menu, you will automatically be taken to the Character Generator. You may also access this menu by pushing C from the main menu. From this menu you can create a new character or delete an existing one. Since this is your first time playing, push C to create a character. If you mess up something while entering your character, simply push X, and you will be returned to the Character Generator Menu. You will now be prompted to enter a character name. You can choose any name you wish, up to 19 characters. If someone else is already using that character name, you will be prompted to re-enter another name. The next 2 things you need to select are your Class and your Race. This is a list of all classes and the advantages and disadvantages of each: FIGHTER - The fighter is the strongest of the classes, selecting a fighter will increase your strength. The spell casting ability of the fighter is very low. WIZARD - Selecting a Wizard will increase your wisdom. A Wizard is also a very powerfull spell caster. The Wizard and the Cleric have the best spell casting ability. BARD - Selecting a Bard will increase your wisdom and your strength. The bard can cast a fair amount of spell, and their ability to steal is noteworthy. CAVALIER - Selecting a Cavalier will increase your strength and your dexterity. THIEF - Selecting a thief will increase your dexterity. A Thief steals things with ease and they are the only class that will get away with it at low levels. However, thieves are very poor spellcasters. CLERIC - Selecting a cleric will increase your intelligence. A Cleric is an excellent spell caster, comparing favorably to the Wizard. Their ability to steal objects is very low. Here is a list of the races, and what advantages each has: ELF - Charisma increases. DWARF - Dexterity increases. HUMAN - Intelligence increases. HALFLING - Constitution increases. HOBBIT - Wisdom increases. HALF-ORC - Strength increases. Use the up and down arrows to choose the class and race that you want to make your character. Now you need to select what variables you want to increase. Everything starts at 10 and the maximum is 99. Use the up and down arrows, and the right and left arrows to increase or decrease the values of each variable. The folliwng is a list of each variable, and where they come into play: STRENGTH - One of your main factors in fighting. The higher your strength, the harder you will hit your opponent and the more damamge you will do. This also has an effect on what weapons, shields, and armor one might be able to wear. WISDOM - Wisdom is the main factor in being able to cast a spell. Wizards and Clerics will profit from a higher wisdom, where fighters may want to have a lower wisdom. INTELLIGENCE - Intelligence is the main factor in being able to create a spell. Wizards and Clerices will profit from a higher intelligence. DEXTERITY - Dexterity plays a small role in attacking. Its main purpose is for stealing. The higher the dexterity, the better your chance of stealing will succede. Dexterity also has an effect on what weapons, shields, and armor one might be able to wear. CONSTITUTION - Constitution plays a small role in attacking. It also has an effect on what weapons, shields, and armor one might be able to wear. CHARISMA - Charisma is your main influence over shop-keepers. Characters with higher charisma will be able to buy objects for a lot less cost. As this variable increases, so does ones ability to sell objects back for more money. Once you have used up the 30 points you are given to distribute, simply push return and your character will be entered into the database. Now exit back to the main menu by pushing X. PLAYING OLTIMA 2000 =================== From the main menu, select P to start the game. If you have more than one character entered into the database, you will be asked what character you wish to use. After you have done this, the screen will clear and begin drawing the playing screen. Halfway through it you will be prompted to push return. After you do this, it will draw the rest of the screen. UNDERSTANDING THE SCREEN ======================== In the center of the screen you will see an area marked "MAP". This is an overhead view of the area around you. Your character will appear as a smiley face in the center of this map. If there is any other characters around you, they will be represented by red letters on your map. There are many other things represented on your map screen that will be discussed later. On the top portion of the screen there is an area in red marked "AREA DETAIL". If a character happens to be within your sight (on your map display), the character represented by the letter on your map will be displayed in this area. For instance, if there is an "A" on your map, simply look in the area details section next to "A" and it will show you exactly what "A" is. There can be up to 24 characters represented in this area. They are listed 12 at a time. To toggle between these screens, push the = key. If a box appears to the left of the character description, then that denotes that the character is controled by the computer. If there is no box next to it, then the character represented there is another user. On the left center of the screen there is a box marked INFORMATION. There are various information boxes including: Often used keys, regents you are carrying, your position, and others. You can toggle between the information by pushing "N" and then a number (1-9). The right center of the screen contains information about your current character. All of the stats on your character, how much gold and food it is carrying, its armor, shield, and current weapon are all displayed in this area. When you first begin the game, become familiar with the territory that you are in. Try to find a castle or a town. It is best if you purchase a weapon before you start fighting. Remember, the further you venture away from where you begin, the more evil the monsters get. 2. Do not go into a dungeon without a torch, if you make that mistake, and you can not see anything, push E again to exit the dungeon. At the begining of the game it is best to purchase a torch and a weapon. Remember to ready your weapon after you have purchased it! 3. Hitpoints can be purchased from the king and queen in castles. This is the only way to get hitpoints, so if you find a castle, remember where it is!
