        | WELCOME TO VEDIT 6.1 FOR DOS |
        +---------------------------------------------+

This file describes how to install and get started with VEDIT for DOS. It
also contains additional DOS specific information not covered in the manuals.

The DOS version also works well with Windows 3.1 and 95/98/ME; it has long
filename support. However, the DOS version does not work well with
NT/2000/XP.

(VEDIT is also available as a 32-bit Windows version optimized for
Windows 95/98/ME and NT/2000/XP.)

TRIAL VERSION: If you are only evaluating VEDIT as a trial version, please
also refer to the file TRIAL-D.TXT. It describes the
limitations of the trial version and how to un-install it.

WINDOWS To install the Windows version of VEDIT, refer to the file
VERSION: README.TXT.

------------
Installation
------------

To install VEDIT for DOS, run the "Install" command as described below.

The exact same set of files (e.g. downloaded or on CD-ROM) are used to
install VEDIT as a trial version, full product or update.

VEDIT can be installed into any desired directory and requires only about 3
Megabytes of disk space.

If you are installing both the Windows and DOS versions of VEDIT, they can
(and should) be installed into the same directory. They are designed to
co-exist. (Either the Windows or DOS version can be installed first.)

Note: The VEDIT installation is exceptionally clean and will not affect any
other programs. It does not change your CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT
files or add/overwrite any files in your /Windows directory. It only
creates the VEDIT directory and adds files there.

>>> To install the DOS version of VEDIT:

1. Insert the VEDIT CD-ROM or floppy disk into your computer. Change to the
drive containing the CD-ROM or floppy disk and give the command:

        install

If you are running under Windows, first start up a DOS box (click the
MS-DOS icon) and then install VEDIT with the "INSTALL" command.

If you get an error related to V-SWAP, give the command "install2".
    (See Installation Notes below).

If you are running "4DOS", "4NT" or "Take Command", you should disable
it just during installation. Otherwise, you may receive a "Not enough
    memory" error during installation.

If you have a monochrome (non-color) display, you may need to give the
    command "install -m".

2. VEDIT will then start! Instead of using a traditional installation
program, VEDIT installs itself using a very flexible "macro".

3. You can install VEDIT as a trial version, full product or an update.
The installation's on-line help describes the differences.

To enable VEDIT as a full product, you need the 15-digit serial-
registration number supplied when you purchased it. This number can
typically be found on the license or CD-ROM envelope. If you purchased
VEDIT as a download, the number was e-mailed to you.

If you install VEDIT as a trial version, refer to the file TRIAL-D.TXT
for details. You can convert a trial version to the full version by
selecting {HELP, Register VEDIT} and entering the serial-registration
number; you do not have to re-install it.

4. You can install VEDIT into any desired directory. The default is
"c:\vedit", but you can select any other. This is called the "VEDIT Home
    Directory".

5. If the destination directory already exists, the installation assumes it
contains a previous version of VEDIT. You can then either archive the old
version, or just overwrite it. You can also transfer the configuration
from the old VEDIT to the new one. Even if you choose overwriting, all
configuration related files are first copied to the ".\OLD" subdirectory.

6. The DOS and Windows version of VEDIT can (and should) be installed into
the same directory. They are designed to co-exist and share configuration
    files.

7. Follow the remaining prompts on the screen. It is easy to later change
any configurations that you now select, such as the color scheme, without
    having to re-install.

We highly suggest selecting the "Normal" keyboard layout which closely
follows Microsoft conventions. Otherwise, commonly used VEDIT functions
will often not be accessible via a "hot-key".

8. After installing VEDIT, you must add the VEDIT.EXE file to your PATH
command. This can be done by adding the VEDIT directory, e.g. c:\vedit,
to the PATH command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Or you can copy VEDIT.EXE
to another directory that is already in your PATH command, perhaps
    c:\dos.

Installation Notes
------------------

1. Refer to pages 25 - 30 (DOS Installation) and other sections in Chapter 2
for details about installing (and uninstalling) VEDIT.

Refer to "Troubleshooting" below if you have trouble starting VEDIT.

(Technical) The install.bat file uses our V-SWAP program to install the
DOS version with as little as 380K of free conventional memory. If V-SWAP
    will not run on your computer, you can use the install2.bat file instead;
however it requires 550K of free conventional memory. Use the DOS "MEM"
command to check how much memory is free.

2. As mentioned in Chapter 2, under DOS and Windows 3.1, your CONFIG.SYS
file should contain "FILES=99". This allows editing up to 32 files at
    once.

3. Please familiarize yourself with the configuration options "Keyboard
typematic rate" and "Keyboard polling", as described on pages 26-27 of
the VEDIT User's Manual. The installation sets them according to your
operating system (DOS, Windows 95/98/ME, etc), but you may want to change
    them.

4. Refer to the WHATSNEW.TXT file for an overview of recent enhancements and
    changes.

The section "Don't miss these topics" in the ERRATA.TXT file lists the
important pages that everyone should read. The installation optionally
    prints ERRATA.TXT.

The on-line help is completely up-to-date and contains details about all
    recent enhancements.

5. If you are updating from an earlier VEDIT, refer to the file WHATSNEW.TXT
for a summary of the enhancements from 5.0 to 6.1.

The file NEW-CMDS.TXT summarizes recent additions and changes to the
VEDIT macro language. (It it oriented to technical users.)

The file CONV3TO4.TXT describes how to convert old 3.x version macros to
the 4.x/5.x macro language with the CONV3TO4.VDM conversion macro.

6. VEDIT for DOS gives you the ability to search, browse and edit disk
sectors directly. HOWEVER, only knowledgeable users who understand how
data is organized on disk should make changes to any disk sectors. Before
making changes, be sure that the entire disk is backed up. VEDIT's disk
sector editing is ONLY intended for technical users!

7. The best way to learn VEDIT is by running the extensive hands-on tutorial
topics in the {HELP, Tutorial} sub-menu. They cover most of the topics in
the manual's "Quick Tutorial" and "Editing Guide" chapters.

Adding a Windows 95/98/ME icon (shortcut) for DOS VEDIT
-------------------------------------------------------

The DOS version of VEDIT is designed to work well in Windows 95/98/ME (and
3.1). It can be run from the normal DOS "C:>" prompt, the Windows 95/98/ME
Desktop or the Windows 3.1 "Program Manager" via its own icon in the supplied
VEDIT.ICO file.

Note: We do not recommend or support running the DOS version of VEDIT under
Windows NT/2000/XP. Please use the 32-bit Windows version of VEDIT.

We recommend running VEDIT from within Windows using a ".PIF" file. A ".PIF"
file supplies information to Windows on how to optimally run an application,
e.g. how much memory to give it and how to share time slices. We supply the
file VEDIT.PIF with all Windows parameters preset for good performance.

Under Win95/98/ME (and 3.1 in Enhanced mode) you can directly access the
clipboard to exchange data with other programs.

VEDIT can be run in Windows as either a full screen DOS program or in a
"window". Press <Alt-Enter> to switch VEDIT between a full screen
application and an windowed application.

>>> To add a Windows 95/98/ME icon (shortcut) for DOS VEDIT:

1. From Explorer or the Desktop, select the folder (group) to which to add
VEDIT's icon. It can also be added to the top-level Desktop.

2.  Right-click in any empty area of the folder or desktop and select "New";
    then select "Shortcut".

3. The "Create shortcut" wizard will then prompt you.

For "Command Line:", enter the full pathname to the VEDIT.EXE file.
    E.g. enter "c:\vedit\vedit.exe".

For "Select a name for the shortcut", enter the program name you want to
see under the icon, e.g. "VEDIT (DOS)".

For "Select an icon", just press [Finish]; the VEDIT icon cannot be
    selected from here.

4. Right-click the new icon and select "Properties". Then select the
    "Program" tab.

Be sure "Close on exit" is not enabled.

5. Select [Change Icon...].

For "File name:" enter the full pathname to the VEDIT.ICO file,
e.g. "c:\vedit\vedit.ico". Select the [Ok] button twice.

Notes: From within VEDIT, press <Alt-Enter> to switch VEDIT between a full
screen application and a windowed application. It works well in
        either mode.

The topic "Changing the VEDIT Icon Properties" in Chapter 4 of the
VEDIT User's Manual describes how to set any desired startup
        invocation options.

e-mail address or other information with anyone else!

-------------
Running VEDIT
-------------

After installing VEDIT, you must add the VEDIT.EXE file to your PATH command.
This can be done by adding the VEDIT directory, e.g. c:\vedit, to the PATH
command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. (You will have to reboot.) Or you can copy
VEDIT.EXE to another directory that is already in your PATH command, perhaps
c:\dos.

You can then edit files by typing "vedit" followed by the name of the
file or files to be edited. E.g.:

        vedit myfile.txt

        vedit file1.txt file2.txt file3.txt

        vedit c:\logs\june\150601.log

        vedit *.c *.h

For on-line help, select the menu item {HELP, Contents} or press <F1> at any
time. The on-line help is very extensive (several hundred printed pages
worth). Each dialog box also has extensive context-sensitive on-line help.

Invocation Options
------------------

VEDIT has many useful invocation options. The on-line help topic "STARTING"
describes them in detail.

For example, the command to open the file MYFILE.TXT in browse-only mode and
start on line 620 is:

        vedit -b myfile.txt -l620 ("l" is the letter L)

Browsing Files
--------------

VEDIT has a special mode for browsing files; this prevents accidental
alterations. In browse mode you can instantly jump to the beginning or end of
the file, or to a relative position in the middle when using the scroll bar
or {Goto} menu. It is particularly useful for browsing huge (20+ Megabyte)
files.

To open a file in browse-only mode, select "[ ] Browse mode" in the file-open
dialog box.

Or, if you are running VEDIT from a command line, use:

        vedit -b filename

Hex-mode Editing
----------------

The function {VIEW, Toggle Hex-mode split} (default: <Alt-=>) makes it easy
to edit a file simultaneously in Hexadecimal and ASCII.

Or press <Alt-D>, the hot-key for {VIEW, Toggle display mode}, six times
to switch the current window into Hex mode. Press it three more times to
restore the normal mode.

Using the Tutorial
------------------

VEDIT is supplied with an extensive hands-on tutorial. We suggest that new
users run through the tutorial items which are located in the {HELP,
Tutorial} menu. One window displays directions while you edit sample files.
General editing, programming, word processing, data/binary file editing,
hex-mode editing and much more, are all covered. A quick overview takes about
20 minutes; working through the tutorial step-by-step will take several
hours, but will make you a very proficient VEDIT user.

Changing the Keyboard Layout
----------------------------

The {CONFIG, Keyboard layout} menu lets you change the keyboard layout as
desired. Let the on-line help guide you. The "Save layout" function lets you
save the entire keyboard layout as a .KEY file. "Load from disk" lets you
load a complete new keyboard layout at any time. The .KEY files are easily
edited; this gives you another (preferred) method of changing the layout.

To have VEDIT emulate Brief or Wordstar, load the files BRIEF.KEY or
WORDSTAR.KEY by selecting {CONFIG, Keyboard layout, Load from disk}. The
files BRIEF.DOC and WORDSTAR.DOC document these emulations.

Note: The instructions in the Tutorial assume the default keyboard layout.
Therefore, we suggest finishing the Tutorial before changing the
        keyboard layout.

-------------
VEDIT Manuals
-------------

You can purchase VEDIT with or without a set of two printed manuals. The 448
page "VEDIT 6.0 User's Manual" covers all editing topics. The 304 page "VEDIT
6.0 Macro Language Reference Manual" covers just the programmable macro
language.

The manuals are also available as Adobe .PDF files on our website:

    www.vedit.com/download/v60-pdf.zip (User's Manual)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following topics are only applicable to the DOS version of VEDIT
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

DOS VEDIT INSTALLATION UNDER WINDOWS NT/2000/XP
-----------------------------------------------

NOTES: We suggest using only the 32-bit Windows version under Windows
NT/2000/XP. We suggest not using the DOS version because it
does not have long filename nor clipboard support under NT and
tends to force the CPU to 100% utilization.

Therefore, WE DO NOT PROVIDE ANY TECHNICAL SUPPORT FOR THE DOS
        VERSION UNDER WINDOWS NT/2000/XP.

Although we do not recommend (or support) using the DOS version of
VEDIT under Windows NT/2000/XP, the following configuration parameters
make it work better. In particular, they often, but not always, reduce
VEDIT's CPU usage so that multi- tasking works better.

>>> To configure DOS version of VEDIT for Windows NT/2000/XP:

1. Give the DOS command "vedit" to run VEDIT and configure it specifically
for Windows NT with the following settings in the {CONFIG} menu. (Press
<Alt-C> to go to the {CONFIG} menu.)

        {CONFIG, Misc, Keyboard typematic rate} to "0"
        {CONFIG, Misc, Keyboard polling} to "1"

If it is important to reduce VEDIT's CPU utilization to a minimum, you
should also change from a software cursor (which is a little nicer) to a
hardware cursor with the following settings:

{CONFIG, Screen display, Cursor in Overstrike mode} to "4"
{CONFIG, Screen display, Cursor in Insert mode} to "5"

2. Make the configuration changes permanent in the VEDIT.EXE file and then
exit VEDIT with the menu selections:

        {CONFIG, Misc, Save config into VEDIT.EXE}

        {FILE, Exit} or press <Alt-X>

RUNNING DOS VEDIT WITH MICROSOFT WINDOWS
----------------------------------------

The DOS version of VEDIT is designed to work very well with Windows
3.1 and Windows 95/98/ME. Pages 27-28 of the User's Manual describes
how to install VEDIT as an icon. Both an icon file VEDIT.ICO and a
"PIF" file VEDIT.PIF are supplied.

From within VEDIT, you can press <Alt-Enter> to switch VEDIT between a full
screen application and a windowed application. It works well in either mode.

You can directly access the Windows Clipboard from within VEDIT with the
{EDIT, Clipboard} submenu.

OS/2 SUPPORT (DOS Version Only)
------------

VEDIT automatically detects when it is running as a DOS application within
OS/2 (2.1 and later including Warp); it then maintains the "Extended
Attributes" when editing OS/2 files. Please note that newly created files
will not be given any extended attributes.

A VEDIT icon can be created with the supplied file VPLUSOS2.ICO.

SPECIAL MOUSE SUPPORT OPTIONS (DOS Version Only)
-----------------------------

Users with a "Mouse Systems" mouse driver should set {CONFIG, Misc, Mouse
options} to a value of "65" or "66". Then select {CONFIG, Misc, Save into
VEDIT.EXE} to make the change permanent.

VEDIT's mouse support is optimized for use with the Microsoft and Logitech
drivers. To support Mouse Systems (and perhaps other) drivers, a
compatibility option(s) must be selected.

The primary values for {CONFIG, Misc, Mouse options} are:

0 Disables the mouse support
1 The mouse cursor starts in the upper left hand corner
2 The mouse cursor starts in the middle of the screen

Three additional options handle mouse compatibility problems. These options
are selected by adding their mask value to your choice of "1" or "2" above.

+128 Supports very old mouse drivers. Rarely if ever needed. (Technical:
VEDIT does not attempt to save/restore the mouse status upon
      startup/exit.)
+64 Causes VEDIT to perform a "Hardware/software" mouse reset upon startup.
Currently needed to support Mouse Systems drivers. (Technical:
Otherwise, VEDIT performs only a "software" reset which is noticeably
faster with Microsoft and Logitech drivers.)
+32 Causes VEDIT to reset the mouse following {MISC, DOS Shell} or {MISC,
Run DOS program}. Some poorly behaved programs don't restore the mouse
driver when they exit; this option is then needed.

The mouse support in the DOS version includes many unique and useful features
including variable-speed scrolling. Refer to the on-line help topic "MOUSE"
for details.

V-SWAP PROGRAM (DOS Version Only)
--------------

The DOS version of VEDIT includes V-SWAP, a separate TSR program that lets
VEDIT completely swap itself and other TSRs out of memory when running DOS
programs from within the editor. This makes the maximum possible memory
available for running large compilers and debuggers. Appendix C in the User's
Manual describes how to install and use V-SWAP.

V-SWAP is primarily needed for VEDIT's compiler support. Under plain DOS,
V-SWAP is best installed in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Under Windows, the VEDIT
icon should run the supplied VV.BAT file, instead of VEDIT.EXE directly. This
installs V-SWAP and then runs VEDIT.

DIALOG BOXES (DOS Version Only)
------------

The DOS version of VEDIT has both "Full" and "Terse " dialog boxes.

"Full" dialog boxes are more industry-standard. They are larger with a
fancier appearance and provide access to all options. Full dialog boxes also
often have point & shoot selection of files, buffer and windows.

"Terse" dialog boxes are similar to previous VEDIT prompts and are typically
just a few lines long. They provide access to just the most common options
and let you see as much of the file as possible while in the dialog box.

Terse or Full can be selected with {CONFIG, Misc, Enable full dialog boxes}.
In a terse dialog box, clearing the default entry (if any) and pressing
<Enter> usually switches to the full dialog box.

Several user interface options can be individually selected for full and
terse dialog boxes. By default, terse dialog boxes are similar to previous
VEDIT prompts and can save a few keystrokes, while full dialog boxes are as
industry-standard as possible.

Interface options include operation of the <Tab> key, defaulting to the
previous input string, and shortcuts for edit buffer, text register and
window selection.

See the on-line help topic "DIALOG" for more information.

STATUS LINE DISPLAY OPTIONS (DOS Version Only)
---------------------------

By default, DOS VEDIT's status line is displayed on the bottom on the
screen with the main menu bar always displayed on the top.

Alternatively, you can have the status line at the top, with the menu bar
only displayed when the main menu is active. This makes one more screen
line available for editing. The main menu can still be activated by
clicking the left mouse button on the top screen line.

You can select where the status line is displayed with {CONFIG, Display
options, Status line display}.

DISK SECTOR EDITING (DOS Version Only)
-------------------

The DOS VEDIT disk sector editing lets you directly browse or modify the
sectors on your hard disk or floppy disk. Either the entire disk or portions
thereof can be opened just like a file. All of VEDIT's editing features can
then be used, including sophisticated search/replace, translating and block
operations.

A primary purpose of disk sector editing is to search for a block of text on
the disk and copy it to the file you are currently editing. This is
particularly useful when you can't remember the filename in which the text
was stored. You can even access the block of text if it is on another disk
partition, e.g. on a UNIX or OS/2 partition.

While traditional disk utilities can also search for text, none have VEDIT's
sophisticated search capabilities with powerful pattern matching and regular
expressions. VEDIT's disk searching is also faster than most disk utilities.

The on-line help topic "DISK" describes disk sector in complete detail.

MACRO LANGUAGE COMMANDS FOR DISK UTILITIES (Technical)
------------------------------------------------------

By combining DOS VEDIT's ability to open the disk for direct sector editing
with commands for accessing the FAT and disk information variables, a
programmer can write custom disk utilities that could perform almost any
imaginable operation on the DOS partition.

This topic is very technical and assumes that you understand the details of
how the DOS partition is arranged on the disk.

The on-line help topic "DISKMACRO" describes this in more detail.

TROUBLESHOOTING DOS VERSION
---------------------------

NOTE: Refer to the topic "Configuration - Troubleshooting" in Chapter 8 if
you are having trouble saving configuration changes.

Hangs immediately

If VEDIT hangs immediately or after a few keystrokes, remove any keyboard
related Terminate-stay-resident programs and try it again. The programs
are often loaded by your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

In some rare cases VEDIT may crash at startup if {CONFIG, Misc, Keyboard
polling} or {CONFIG, Misc, Keyboard repeat rate} are set to any value
other than "0". If this occurs, start up VEDIT with the invocation
options "-j" and "-k" which force these settings to "0" (their most
    compatible values).

        vedit -j -k

Then select {CONFIG, Misc, Save into VEDIT.EXE} to make these settings
    permanent.

Follow the directions below for "Keyboard typematic rate...".

Keyboard appears "hung" after exiting VEDIT

Follow the directions below for "Keyboard typematic rate...".

Try tapping the <Alt> and <Ctrl> keys to see if this clears the "hung"
condition. For reasons unknown to us, some systems temporarily get the
<Alt> and <Ctrl> keys "stuck" in the down position when they really are
not. Users reporting this problem report the same problem with other
    programs.

Cannot read menus on monochrome display

Most likely VEDIT was installed for a color display and you have a Laptop
computer or a monochrome display connected to color adapter. Start up
VEDIT with the "-m" option and then select {CONFIG, Save into VEDIT}.

Cannot read first letter in menus

This occurs with some monochrome displays and Laptops. First adjust your
screen contrast and brightness controls to see if this helps. If not,
select the {CONFIG, Colors} sub-menu and change "Color for menu bar
selection" and "Color for menu selection" to "7", "15" or "127".
Experiment with these and other values.

Keyboard typematic rate is slow in VEDIT or after exiting

VEDIT normally speeds up the keyboard typematic rate (key repeat rate)
inside VEDIT and then restores it upon exit. However, this interferes with
other keyboard enhancers and many PS/2 machines. In this case configure
{CONFIG, Misc, Keyboard typematic rate} to "0". With this setting, VEDIT
does not attempt to change the typematic rate. Then select {CONFIG, Save
into VEDIT}. Finally, exit and start up VEDIT again.

For more details see the topic "Installation - Setting the Keyboard
Typematic Rate" in Chapter 2 (Getting Started).

Mouse does not work or works erratically in VEDIT

For VEDIT"s mouse support to work you must have a mouse driver installed,
typically this is the line "DEVICE=MOUSE.SYS" in your CONFIG.SYS file or
the line "MOUSE" in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. If the mouse cursor does not
move to the lower lines of a 43 or 50 line display, you should check that
you have a recent version of the mouse driver, version 6.24 or later for
the Microsoft mouse, version 4.15 or later for the Logitech mouse.

The mouse support is optimized for the Microsoft and Logitech mouse; if
you have a Mouse Systems mouse, you may have to set {CONFIG, Misc, Mouse
options} to "65" or "66". Then select {CONFIG, Save into VEDIT}, exit and
    start up VEDIT again.

If your mouse still acts erratically, you can try setting {CONFIG, Misc,
    Mouse cursor} to "129" or "130". Then select {CONFIG, Save into VEDIT},
exit and start up VEDIT again. These special values allow VEDIT to work
    with older style mouse drivers.

    If you still have trouble with the mouse, select the {CONFIG, Misc}
sub-menu and press [HELP] (<F1>). Additional values for "Mouse options"
that solve other mouse problems are described.

With compatible VGA cards and mouse drivers, VEDIT"s mouse support will
work with extended screen sizes such as 132 by 50. If your mouse does not
work in these extended modes, you should contact the VGA card and/or
mouse manufactures for a compatible mouse driver.

After exiting VEDIT, DOS only scrolls in the top half of the 43/50 lines on
the screen.

When running VEDIT on an EGA/VGA system, you can toggle to 43/50 line
mode. If you then exit VEDIT and configuration parameter
Config(S_RESTORE) is set to "0", your screen will stay in the 43/50 line
mode and DOS will normally run properly with the additional lines.
However, if you notice that DOS is only running in the top 25 lines, the
most likely cause is having ANSI.SYS installed. ANSI.SYS does not support
more than 25 lines. Many EGA/VGA cards come with a utility disk
containing an improved ANSI.SYS which supports 43/50 lines.
